Walked into Tescos last night...

I'm advising that CCTV operatives do their jobs, as should the security operatives.

By all means ask groups of people to remove them, however if they cannot follow the movements of ONE person with a hood on in their store I'd be very suprised.

What good is a CCTV recording of "a person wearing a hood" to the police? The point of CCTV as has been said above is to catch people after a crime has been committed, not track every single person in a store all the time.

By saying they should "follow the movements of someone with a hood" you are essentially discriminating against every single person who wears a hood and that they should be "kept track of", it is allot simpler to simply ask people to remove their hoods when they come in, most places are politer about it and if you refuse then what does that say about you? Why do you need your hood up in a store which is most likely heated other than possibly to conceal your face or simply so you can act like a dick to security because you get a kick out of acting the big man, like the OP.

I'm genuinely shocked you've just said that, I can't believe the enormous lack of common sense form making a comment like that, that is EXACTLY what CCTV is for, to ensure that every customer is monitored, because every customer COULD BE a criminal, if cameras only turned on when certain people came in, that WOULD be stereotyping and that WOULD be wrong. What point are you trying to make here?

Most customers are not criminals. Statistics bear this out, and my common sense also tells me so.

You realise most CCTV isn't continuously monitored and the reason they want your face on it is so they can use it as evidence to identify that you are you when they come to press charges? Yeah, I thought you did, just checking....

It is in the two supermarkets I worked in, one a Tesco.

Also, people in here are starting to act like having a hood on your head is akin to a cloaking device or something. Mystical powers!!! oooh!

Your face is still clearly visable though. And if not on the CCTV footage, the company needs to reinvest some of its greed back into its own security and not bug me with ridiculous requests about my attire. I'm not in ghille, trying to move from isle to isle without detection.

I'm in getting a tin of ******* beans, but have it your way I'll go naked next time ;)

CCTV is commonly used for catching criminals after they have committed crimes though, the point you make is that if they are alone, they can easily be tracked with a hood up, which is fine. But if the Police wish to pursue someone who has committed a crime, the CCTV will be useless if they have their hood up.

Apart from anything, the inability to cover their face will likely cause less counts of criminal acts, simply because they are unable to cover themselves from CCTV.

Cover face?

I don't put my hoods and tops on backwards.

Regardless of store policy, it's nothing more than good manners, you are inside so take your hood down/hat off, fact.

What good is letting a thief out the store in the first place?

I didn't say that, what I said is 'if they cannot even follow one person on CCTV' there is something wrong not 'they should follow them'. Nice try though.

A person is a person, regardless of your face visability you can still see their actions, ie leg of lamb down the trousers. You stop them then. This is how security worked in our tescos, cause other than that what good is a random sketchy photo to anyone? You've very little hope after that if they are not on the shoplifters list.

But if you want to get all beefed up about this go on, but your not seeing my point.

I mean, obviously hoods can be quite deep, thus covering the face when viewed from slightly above?

Obviously, not all hoods are deep... or worn this way even if they are. I certainly don't if I have them up, skulk about like some grim reaper sod that.

But we will generalise to get our point across anyway, cause its cool that way innit!

If their CCTV is crap its their problem. We don't ask people in the subways to keep their hoods down do we?

I walked into my local store to buy some cigs. I go in there several times a week for a newspaper or fags. I take my daughters in there to buy sweets if they've been good. I don't walk around making or looking for trouble.

You are on the basis that they are going to remember you - they shouldn't make any assumptions anyway on my opinion...

Nonsense, In any supermarket I've ever been in where there is a monitoring station there are frequent occaisions it's not manned. The purpose of the CCTV system is recording, an additional benefit employed by some is real time monitoring, not any smaller stores though.

They need a clear shot of your face on CCTV for it to be viable for identifying you/providing evidence of what you did after the act. A hood however small it may be can be used to cover your face when you walk past a camera or obscure what hair colour/length you have. It's an absolute minor inconvinience to have to remove a hood/hat, more so a hood than a hat as it's not like you then need to carry it around. I don't see how you can't see the benefits of people not having hoods up, or why it's such an issue that people should be asked to remove them. Every single person who comes into the venue I work at is asked to remove a hood if they have one up or a hat if they're wearing one, even if it's raining, we do it just while they're going in but that's the only time they're caught on CCTV

But some people do, what's not to understand .

Is the security guard somehow meant to automatically know that you won't steal anything or that you were just walking in for some fags, or that you go in there several times a week? How would they know this? They don't, so they treat everyone the same and ask them to take off their whoring hoods! Not particularly difficult!!

You (should) have two choices: comply, or don't shop there.

I'd expect statistics also point to most thieves taking steps to conceal their identity, such as wearing hoodies or baseball caps...

In liverpool there are some shops with signs outside saying you aren't allowed in wearing a hood up or a cap on. Seems fair enough to me. I've never seen anybody have an issue with it.

And what about motorcyclists, is it unreasonable to ask them to remove their helmets?

Spot on... The security guy has a job to protect the store and doing his job.
