Why do most people forget the most important part when speccing a new build?

I forgot to mention that probably the most popular OS at the minute (being Windows 7 OEM Home Premium) is around £80 so not a cheap thing to be leaving out

as long as someone in your family is in full time education it's only £40 for the upgrade version of windows 7 pro if you know where to go :)

Well they had an OS on the old machine, then assuming it's not an OEM license, there's no reason they couldnt transfer it over. People are generally quite good at asking for what they want, and where there's ambiguity, we often post questions to clear it up. We see many threads every day in which people say they need a rig, sometimes they'll add, say, "OS, keyboard and mouse required", sometimes they wont. People arent (all) stupid, they know what windows is and they know it won't just be bundled with a hard drive that they buy from OcUK.

Perhaps someone who's posted on the boards longer than i have can correct me if i'm wrong, but one doesnt exactly see people coming back on shouting "omg u all forgotz windows!!"

The answer is..................The Operating System (I see more specs missing this out than any other component).

This is hardly the most important part, as one can be downloaded in a few minutes whereas missing ram can take several days to source.

There are far less choices with the OS than anything else, so most people assume that the person asking either has an OS, or knows what they want anyway.

They either have or want windows... Or already know to download linux or solaris... Really whats the point in "speccing" windows.... the vast majority of people asking for specs are looking for performance/price. I guess they should mention if they need to leave budget for windows :P

It's the 'assuming' part I don't like. If people are saying spec me a PC for £700 when they actually have £800 to spend (intending to buy windows anyway) then fair enough, so long as I know.....which I don't :D

How can you download it without having it in the first place

Making the assumption that you can find a different computer to borrow for a little while, or that your old one isn't completely dead. Of course if you don't know anyone at all then this could be a challenge.

Just spec them lunix :D

Also, if you can post on an online forum you can probably also download a cracked version of Wierrr---- Ubuntu or something.

They forgot the kittens!!!

And OS I would guess is always assumed you either use your current. Problem is there are plenty of OS choices and if the poster does not state what his intended purpose is, his knowledge, his potentially qualifications for special licenses (student) or even upgrade path (maybe he got vista).

Most spec me a XXX are about creating a system which will be the optimal compromise of features / speed and compatibility for the price range given.

PSU. couple of years ago a m8 e-mailed me the spec for his new wPC, minus PSU. If i hadn't of told him he would have ordered without it.

Why would you spec them an OS? Thats down to the user to choose. When asking for a computer spec, Its quite obvious they're looking for components and compatibility.

Life is assumptions and approximations. Assuming access to forum => access to a linux iso is a reasonable assumption.

^or at least they should be aware of this. I'm reasonably sure as a twelve year old vandalising some antique version of windows I understood that I was breaking the program, not the computer itself.

It's not forgotten, Most people on here have an OS they are going to use. If not they usually specify an OS to be included. Someone will usually ask OP to clarify what parts they want as well.

Thread fails to deliver.

Most posts ask for a base unit, machine, or rig. That implies hardware. Besides, are you so quick to dismiss our penguin friend?!
