LOTRO Beginner recommend race/class

Lore masters are excellent at higher levels and great fun in groups. They're also the only class that seems nerf proof and the only class i've played where traiting down each line is viable for group play.

At low levels DPS isn't too great but when you have all your high level skills your burst damage (aoe at that!) is second to none. A legendary staff with staff strike CD on it helps a bunch with sustained dps. Even when a mob is big bad and ugly as hell sticky tar+a bit of kiting makes it possible to down nearly anything. Just keep running from one side to the other and have your pet nibble away at him the whole time.

Pets aren't great tbh. They have decent utility but they're not like traditional WoW pets and are only there to supplement your damage rather than be the focus of your powers. The lynx pet is decent for trash mobs as they have nice spike damage. The raven is the perfect pet for fighting elites as they have some nice debuffs and a decent amount of flank events (which are reactives that can provide heals). Bear is nice on big bosses that don't do shadow damage for the shatter arms skill (10% to incoming damage for 10secs every 30 secs) and its force taunt can be a tank saver on raid bosses.

It is a fantastic mmo but I fear for it's future.
The last expansion siege of mirkwood has all the signs of a company that has had a lot of layoffs.
It is very linear and small compared to the first 2 volumns.
I have all hopes on the next big expansion but if it doesn't measure up I will have to quit.

It's future will be decided when Mordor is released, i expect that to be the final expansion to the game.

If your preference is a high dps dealing class then you are have 3 main options:

Champion - Melee class with heavy armour, dual-wielding weapons, high morale, good icpr, sustainable high dps over long fights, off tanking ability, high crit rates, great aoe, aggro management etc. An all round class and my main char, two big self heals and a 30s cd small heal are amongst some of the fantastic skills we have.

Hunter - Ranged class with medium armour, high dps, high crit rates, can stun / trap, taxi, easiest class in pvmp, pew pew pew, run speed buff, takes poison away, has some ok melee skills, can use off hand weapons too.

Runekeeper - Tactical dps nuker with light armour, the RK has an attunement stone with two ends, at one end is dps and the other healing. You have two sets of skills that raise the attunement to either dps or healing. If you have +7 battle attunement and need to heal then you are in for a wait while you get your healing bar up. Great class to play as you can crit heavily and nuke mobs down very quickly, versitile in raids and fellowships.

My mate has lent me this and the trial key in the box, i thought it would have installed the Shadows of Angmar but it's the Seige of Mirkwood? is this just the current version or am i missing out on the Shadows of Angmar?

Soz for being a noob lol

Mirkwood is the recent expansion, you need Shadows of Angmar to play.

It's probably just showing you what the current expansion is, like when i bought the box set with Moria, it showed only as Moria but installed Shadows of Angmar as well.

Guardian. Place to be really. With a twist, trait up for Overpower (with 2 handed weapons) until you need to fellow (even then only for the long/hard instances).

Its good DPS, and most importantly you can easily takle qs which are 4 levels higher than you (orange and even some red). Thing with tactical damage is i find its nowhere near as effective on higher level enemies. Doing the higher level qs, will give you better gear for your level and make leveling quicker.

Snowbourne is basically the main server everyone goes to cause it's at the top, which means you will get a lot of the flamers, haters etc. Laurelin is the popular choice among people who want to stay away from the people that ruin the game for you.

Evernight is fully of crazy people :)

Pick a champ dude, endless fun but will get nerfed at next expac due to remorseless being how it should be.

I'm on Laurelin with the trial, ordered the full game now as well. Didnt get off it till 2.30 this morning, up early for work then.

Thinking of having a blast on the trial. Been a wow player since release, however after quitting i've got a few hours spare. Are minstrels any good? As a healer mainly.

I installed Shadows of Angmar for the trial and its showing up as the Siege of Mirkwood, is there a trial for each expansion? I've ordered the game now so when I put in my new key will it go Back to Shadows of Angmar. Or it just showing the title screen for the latest expansion ?, i've got myself a bit confused and dont want to be starting the game from the wrong part - if thats even possible

The splash screen when you're loading always shows the latest expansion, whether you've got it or not.

@ Pac3y - Minstrels are the primary healers in lotro, so no problems if that's what you're looking for. They also have a DPS mode called war speech, which knocks their healing abilities down to 20% of normal, but ups their dps drastically. It was introduced to make them soloable basically, and makes them a lot of fun to play.

Just remember to turn it off when you group :)

ahh same as Wow then, I was getting myself into a tizz in the early hours over it lol, it's a bit overwhelming at first, so many options etc...

I've chosen the human Champion as i've come from a dps warrior in Wow. Really enjoyed the first 10 levels, looks stunning and runs really well even on my setup. Whats the level cap of the trial? I've ordered it so I can have the box rather than digitally so I wont get it a new key for a few days.

@ jamarastra

I don't think there is lvl cap for trial, only limitation appart for time are that you can't use Auction House, mail, send tells and trade with other players.

@ Gypo

How is remorless being nerfed? I'm taking a break from Lotro atm. Hope they're not going to lower the damage on crits, however I do think it needs longer cooldown (i.e. 30sec). The attack itself is not "overpowered" at all. If you don't crit it does average/low damage.
