Behind you... Naked!
A While back now, I was one of the many victims of the Hiper Click Dead PSU issue.

Annoyingly I was well within my warranty, but I could not find the receipt and so I put the PSU to the side for a bit and bought myself a new ( NON HYPER ) PSU.

Anyway, time has gone by and I still have this PSU

I just threw it onto the bench and started it up and I remember what its doing... ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON-OFF a couple of times a second.

Anyya, I opened the thing up and had a peek inside, its hardly used and its still as clean as a whistle and there is nothing immediately obvious that has gone pop, everythign looks to be soldered in nicely, so can anyone possibly tell me if there was any specific cause as t why those HIPER PSUs all failed?

Shame to waste it really.

Thanks.

I believe it was cheap chinese capacitors going bad. Yours doesnt sound like it failed in the same way as most though.

my wifes hiper type r makes high pitched whining noises, now its all in a plexi case the whistling affects the monitor and gives interference lines on it :(
heres a pic to show theyre not all dead yet!

ShaolinDreams:
LOL maybe!

BIGBC:
Internally though, all my caps look fine.. All the components "look" ok
However it kind of pulses so that does sound to me like a Cap or two certainly are acting up!
Maybe I will go through the lot replacing them all with Japanese ones?
I did this on my good old Atari TT a while back and its made the world of difference.

BUTTKINZ:
You make me sick.
Just look at that thing... Do you think its funny do you?
Well... Do you?
Just look how clean that is!
I bet you have never even turned it on have you?
Do you live in a surgery or something?

LOL

Typically a capacitor going is very noticeable - normally accompanied by a bang and plume of smoke.
Messing with PSUs is not something I know much about, if you think you can fix it then go for it but read up on the risks first.

Yes of course.

Im no electronics expert, however Im no fool either.

I have done many hundreds of little projects and jobs and so I am very capable of doing a lot of jobs... I just dont know enough to fault find certain specific things...

As I said, I have an Atari TT here that started to fool me about. The PSU is a 120w job and was certainly looking worse for wear, and so, since a replacement simply isnt an option, or wasnt at the time, I decided to simply go through each and every component, stripping the entire PSU as I went along, going through the Diodes first and then the resistors ( I already have all of those ) then the CAPs ( Again, I have those too ) then working on the xformer and the trannies last... Oh, and I also went over the back of the PCB re-tracing every single line to make sure that they all have good contacts plus some traces looke a little dry anyway, and after 20 years...

Anyway, it worked and its still better than ever to this day.

So, I have no worries about giving this one a shot.

I was rather hoping that there was a single Oh its this CAP that blows or its that Transistor.... At least if its a single thing then that would be easier for me, but as I said, everythign inside looks perfect.

And yes, when caps go, they often at the very least, leak, but there is nothign of the sort in there?

Well you sound like you have a much better idea than me then.
Ive just heard theres serious risks to it.

Of course you are right.

No such thing as being to cocky when it comes to electricity.

People who do that deserve to get a shock, but I know enough I feel to give it a shot at least... If I can do all the caps then I should have a new PSU thats better than new.

In theory at least!!!
