AMD confirms 12 core processors after eBay outing

Intersting bit of news especially with intels hex core stuff on our doorstep, will be nice to see some benchmarks comparing oct and dodec core from amd vs intels hex core

When it comes down to the performance of the hex core chips, we already know that Intel is gonna win anyways even though we haven`t seen any benchmarks comparing the two, but on price, AMD will definitely win.

Im not too sure as intel general have higher clock speeds etc but if they're going up against 8 and 12 core chips they will be at a massive disadvantage in highly multi threaded benchmarks.

However I do believe intel will still hold the performance crown for gaming.

As far as we know these are being released on a new socket as the few that popped up on said auction site we're listed as being a new socket so my guess is they will start releaseing new boards in the next couple of months.

However these will probably be server/workstation chips to begin with as we are still yet to see hex core chips aimed at the desktop market I.E phenom and athlon branding

Can't waut for these processors and if they are AM3 probably won't need to change my motherboard and heatsink .

Althjough I don't mind if they give a great performance increase

They are for the Socket G34 platform, so it'll be new motherboard and heatsink time at the very least, if not new case and PSU too.

Well, according to the newest official release information for Intel's Six-Core Core i7-980X Gulftown, it will have no less than 3.33 GHz clocked straight out of the box, and according to latest news on AMD's Desktop Six-Core, their Six-Core chips will be clocked at 2 something GHz straight out of the box.

No, info if theyre going for a die shrink yet however I would assume so as these will be the opteron variant of bulldozer.

imagine a dual processor Xeon/AMD board with two 4ghz 12-core chips.... that's 96ghz it will happen and i will be buying one

It wouldnt be 96ghz it would be 24 cores @ 4ghz each.

A 96ghz processor will complete an operation 24 times (give or take) faster than an i7 if its a single threaded app , however that wouldnt be these case as only one core can work on a single thread so it would still be 4ghz.

24 cores would only be useful crunching massive numbers, audio/video work and rendering as these are the only things that are properly multithreaded

2 things, whoever compared these to the Intel i7, and desktop CPUs in general - The CPU is a server CPU, thus it will cost a fortune and is made for a server environment, not to mention it is a 32bit CPU (So you will be limited to the 3.2GB~ of RAM).

i7 is a 64bit Desktop CPU, so there is no sense in comparing the 2. AMD plan to release new 4 core desktop CPUs, with Intel releasing 6 core desktop CPUs. AMD are still behind in performance factors but as said above they offer very competitive pricing.

EDIT: Intel's server/workstation CPUs are the Xeons for those of you that didn't know :).
