Returing busted MB.. what do i need to do?

I have contacted OC who have asked I send the busted MB back. (we are assuming this and I have tried another PSU and it still has no juice. 3 months old = me VERY *cough* angry.)

So, I would like some advice. I will have to take everything off the MB inc CPU, fan, RAM etc.

I am taking this opportunity to be a better case however...I am worried about the CPU. As I have to take the CPU back out - does this mean I need to buy new thermal paste?

Is there anything else I need to do?

Thanks for any help.

Oh can anyone recommend me a case? There are so many and my budget is up to £70 ish pound. I dont use water cooling and I do not need something thats flashing and dancing :p

You will need new thermal compound and also something to clean off the current thermal compund such as Isoprophyl Alcohol.

Arctic Silver 5 or Arctic Cooling MX-3 are the current favourites.

Also make sure you replace the LGA socket protector befoire returning it if its an intel board.

Absolutely, if physical damage is caused during transport, and the socket protector isnt fitted, thats pretty much auto voided warrenty, even if the board was faulty anyway.

Thanks for the replies.

It is an Asus board AMD CPU and I dont remember and sort of protector.

Also, what kind of alcohol is that? Is it a special type?

check your cpu pins are ok, check to see if there bent or missing

oh and its not good at all

The pins look ok. All uniform and straight. There are four gaps but I seem to recall there are gaps in the socket, plus I can see the grren underneath, no holes where anything could go.

It'll be fine. Next time, give the heatsink a twist to break the seal before removing. It's common to have the cpu come away with the heatsink on AMD boards due to the design. I have lost count of the amount of times it happened to me and I changed CPU's more often than my socks!

You should be fine returning an AMD board, it's intel boards that are very easily damaged as mentioned previously.

Isopropyl Alcohol is commonly reffered to as IPA and is ideal for removing grease. High street electrical specialists sell it in aerosol form as it is for cleaning circuit boards and electrical components. Judging by your posts you are not experienced in building pc's (no offence intended if you are) so you may be better just buying some new paste (mentioned previously) and cpu cleaning fluid from here (articlean).

I have installed everything at one time or another but this was my first build from scratch with everything. Installing the CPU was easy as it was new, just got worried when then CPU came out as well with the fan.

Thanks for the help. Turns out its not my MB just my PSU that blew up.. thought it was both earlier.

So should I take the CPU off the fan by gently twisting it off then clean it?

This is slightly different to simply installing them from new:)

Heat the heatsink with a hair dryer to get it warm, not boiling hot! mind,

When the thermal interface material (TIM) is warm its easier to remove.

Also when removing it becareful not to bend any pins.

bit of heat and you will be fine.

I got in contact with my local computer shop to see about some paste. They said if I bring them in they would separate and clean the CPU for me for free.

Figured this best!

I am suprised at the PSU blowing up though only being 3 months old and a Corsair too. My first part I have ever had to send back.

THanks for the info.
