District 9

"Overhyped"? District 9 wasn't hyped at all.

Avatar, on the other hand... well, you've seen the photos of Neil Fawcett and his friends under the tree with the toilet paper on it. That's all I'm going to say.

I only heard of Avatar through friends, it was advertised while I was watching District 9as well :)

I thought as I've said District 9 is fantastic :)

Avatar recieved a lot of attention because of the 3D gimmick and the effects.

I thought the whole story was crap, the fact a lot of it was recorded on a hand held cam put me off too.

The only decent part was the action scene at the end.

Got the blue -ray although not viewed 'that' version as yet. I'm not a keen one for the 'documentry' type films (cloverleaf, Lionel Blair witch project etc etc), but have to admit, i LOVED this film.

Orignal in that the Aliens ALREADY landed so none of this " oh no, they are coming !" crap, it inspired me the first time i watched it, and thought it bestowed a sense of originality amongst all those 'we are not alone out there' films.

It's a keeper imo, well worth the watch again and again

Not watched avatar yet, but if its worse than Discrict 9 then it must be REALLY crap.

I went to watch avatar ready to hate it, as I knew the plot/storyline was going to be insipid and cliched. And it was, but the visuals were so brilliant I didn't notice that at all. One to watch in cinema in 3d goodness, but doubt I will ever watch it on dvd.

i watched it when i was stoned out my head
i can only remember some wierd talking guy and a space ship under the floor lolol
might have to give this another go sober. :D

I know I'm late to the party with D9 but I thought I'd add my 2p.

I agree with Tefal, it was nothing special. I didn't hate it but I didn't love it either.

The story is half-cocked, the acting is reasonable but I found it hard to relate to any of the characters, the special effects were good but you could still tell the aliens were CGI and despite the whole 'it wasn't a Hollywood ending' it was still a predictable ending.

It certainly wasn't the best film of 2009.

District 9 is the thinking man's Avatar. It's the movie James Cameron could have made if he'd been more focused on substance than style.

I was underwhelmed by both films - Avatar is prettier than D9, D9 is grittier, they are both fairly average films and neither were particularly cerebral despite their blatant moral messages.

Fair enough, thanks for the reply :)

Out of interest, what did you think of Moon, Avatar, Cloverfield..?

All these films seem to have a marmite reaction

(Just for context)

Moon I thought was a very enjoyable film (albeit predictable).
Avatar was style over substance, nothing more.
Cloverfield I enjoyed watching at the cinema but having watched again since I really went off it.

Out of all of those mentioned (including D9) The only one I would consider buying would be Moon.

Panzer

I tried to enjoy Moon. I really did. Unfortunately it was so pretentious and so poorly done that I just couldn't find anything redeemable in it. The premise was sound, but the execution was poor and the ending was a complete anticlimax. There was no sense of tension or drama.

Oh, and the "HAL" rip-off was simply embarrassing. Shockingly bad characterisation; it never felt real, unlike Kubrick's brilliant machine.

I've watched D9 a heap of times now, I don't seem to get bored watching it.

In one of the mini interviews in the film, when they are talking about a possible command module having dropped off, a guy says something along the lines of "there were pieces dropping off the ship for months".

So I assumed this was bits and pieces of alien technology dropping off (or being thrown off - maybe there were some aliens left hiding on the ship who were never evacuated) which the aliens on the ground then collected/scavenged and then used or sold.

I thought it was excellent, the acting from Sam Rockwell really brought two different clones together and pulled it off very well. It asked lots of questions.

I don't think it was a "rip-off", GERTY was wanting to help the clones and was in fact a nice robot, it's just after seeing 2001 you half expect all science fiction robots to be evil.

This isn't the Moon thread, I put Moon up there with 2001.

Back on topic.

I'm referring to the idea of a robot with its own ID and consciousness. GERTY never managed to convey personality, unlike HAL.

Don't think it was supposed to do that. This was a normal robot just following its programming which was to help the clones - no AI going of the rails. It just had a flaw in that the programmers did not foresee the clones becoming aware - the robot had called in help to deal with situation so it was back to its duties of helping out. Infact I thought it was a deliberate attempt to show how a robot could fall short in a unplanned for situation and will just follows its original programming.

As for district 9... I liked the acting from Sharlto and thought the scene where they go hut to hut is one of the highlights. Plus don't see why people compare this with Avatar - it had good effects but could have been done without them as this film was centred around Wikus.
