Has anyone ever installed Microprose Grand Prix 4 and thought it was a bit outdated, graphically and lacking updated cars and tracks? Well, if like me you’re a big Formula one fan and fancy playing a ‘very’ realistic F1 sim on your PC (and lets face it, your choices are rather limited) then grab a copy of Geoff Crammond’s Grand Prix 4 – its available for under a £10, and then go to gp4db.com and download the 2006 /07 season mega mod pack. The pack provides instructions on how to configure this all up, and prepare to be blown away…!!

Now, its not going to have the graphical prowess of some of the more modern race games on PS3 or Xbox360, as after all this game came out in 2001. However its still a really good looking game, I do remember when GP4 come out, and trying to get it to run on a Pentium III.. Yeah right, it was mostly like a slideshow – at that time..
On a core duo with a decent 3D card, and the updated mod files, and if you’re into Formula one, then this game will blow your socks off with just how startling realistic, amazingly quick and complete a formula one game can be…. If you couple this up to a 42” 1080p TV at 1280 x 1024 I thought the game looked stunning..!!
Now warning…. Its really tricky to play. Once updated with Mods, I found the control via keyboard on anything but amateur settings with all driving aids turned on to be almost impossible.. Keyboard acceleration just results in the car getting to much power and you spin un-controllably.
Your best bet is either get a steering wheel, or best compromise is a PS2 or PS3 joypad, and configure the game to use a combination of analog and switched button and stick control….
I tried a standard saitek USB gamepad, and it was useless. A PS3 pad plugged in via USB works a lot better, and gives much better control On Semi Pro levels this game will challenge, on pro you need to be able to drive around tracks at almost real life lap times…
The game is that quick, and very addictive….. Nothing I’ve played with the mods installed comes close to replicating the 2006 F1 season around Silverstone….. If you’ve followed the install guide for the mega mod pack correctly, you should also have GPfx installed, and you can update the sound to proper 3D sound and on decent 5.1 etc speaker systems, the game also sounds like real F1…All you need now is a smoke machine, and the smells of burning rubber and exhaust fumes….
For next to nothing, you can get a rather decent racing game on a modest spec PC…
