Laser Eye Surgery

I went for the top one. Intralase with wavefront, this is a Lasik based operation.

Main different between Lasik and Lasek is how they create the flap.

....and sorry to be annoying, to save me reading back through the thread again.....who did you use for this?

My local seems to be optical express, which seem to be well recommended? :)

Have you guys considered going somewhere like Poland to do it? It should come out to be way cheaper there.

It's my eyes. I'd rather go to a place where I can have constant after care, and be able to chat to before/after the op. I wouldn't consider going somewhere else just for price when it comes to eye surgery.

Optical express is very good IME/IMO.

Here are my experiences:

There are videos on youtube - but basically they cut a flap of eyeball, peel it back, laser the underneath and then roll the flap back.

Have you though about contact lenses?

I can understand people not wanting to wear glasses but all the expense, pain and risk do not seem worth it compared to 'night and day' contact lenses.

A lot of people, and I mean a LOT aren't suitable for night and day glasses, the lenses are rated at up to 30 days, but when you get them you're supposed to do the usual few hours first day, increasing over time and optician is supposed to keep a very close eye on you the first few days you wear them overnight and continuously, most people are told they really shouldn't wear them all the time.

I don't get on with them at all well, in as much as I find them very very uncomftable but can wear them for several days at a time. Still have problems with things like swimming and, its pretty much a statistical odd's on probability that in your lifespan of wearing contacts, one will rip, and scratch your eyeball or you'll get an infection when one isn't cleared properly. I've had one scratch from a contact lense, which resulted in inability to wear contacts/glasses for a week, being all but blind, having to wake up hourly to to antibiotic drops, because infections in the eye are very serious.

Likewise, playing sport, mud in the eye, dust when riding a bike, wearing glasses also presents problems in all the same ways.

This is the thing that swayed me(can't afford it yet though), the risk of the surgery is low, so far no ones gone blind and the massive majority get significantly improved vision, even if it means less glasses use, or cheaper glasses and thinner contacts have to be used its a plus, most people don't need either after. The problem is, glasses and contacts DO carry risks, your risk of eye infection over someone who doesn't wear contacts is increased massively, the cost is pretty expensive if you only really get on with dailies(though you can wear them longer, but again, thinner material, more likely to break which can cause problems).

I'd be likely from my age now, to spend just as much on surgery as I would on glasses and contacts over the next 10 years really, if the surgery works and I get 20 years before the "old age" vision issues start, then i've saved a bunch and avoided lots of problems.

I'll just add myself to this thread for the record.

I had my eyes done almost one year ago (March 3rd 2009) and it's one of the best decisions I made.

I had mine done at OE in Uxbridge and had the top price procedure (Intralase Wavefront Lasik). As others have said, the Op is completely painless with just pressure on the eye while they cut the flap. It doesn't hurt in the slightest. If you can cope with the dentist then eye surgery is a breeze.

The only thing I found was that once I got home and the drops wore off my eyes started to sting like ****. I had to keep them closed, take paracetamol and sleep for the rest of the afternoon. Once I woke up and they were no longer stinging everything was still cloudy and an bit blurry, but the bits I could see were already clearer.

The check ups all confirmed I had at least 20/20, perhaps higher.

One year on vision is still great.
I do find that I get tired eyes while using the PC for long periods. Something I didn't have problems with while wearing Glasses/Contacts. As long as I take breaks (as we all should anyway) then it's fine. Night driving is a fine. I get dazzled by the lights a little but it's not major.

I did suffer from dry eyes so I always carry drops with me.
The Optrex Eye Mist/Spray is great for that.

I have been tempted, the Laser, no problem, I could handle that, but the cutting a flap thing, no way. I cannot even stand the thought of it.

That's what puts me off and the movement of the eye? Maybe the machine has a cut out or something? or is it a case of simply staring at a point for a long period of time without blinking?

You can't really move your eye as it's clamped in place, and you have to stare at a point for a few seconds, easy. Secondly there are sensors that react at the speed of light if you do move your eye to shut off the laser. You don't feel anything because they put antiseptic drops in your eyes.

The only discomfort I had was a little bit of throbbing after the op once the antiseptic had run out, but really, not an issue, it's more painful scratching an itch than the pain you get from it.

Has anyone had this done with large pupils?

I have just had a consultation, and was told i had large pupils over 8mm if memory serves. Now having a read up, it seems this is where most of the problems start to come in.

Ie halos, ghosting and starbursts

So has anyone had it done and what was the result?

I'm looking into intralase wavefront

They told me that mine were large and after a couple of months, I stopped noticing any problems. Even problems that were there were minor glare and starbursts around streetlights etc. certainly nothing like bad enough to stop me driving.

If you're having the top treatment then go for it unless they specifically say that you are at high risk of problems. I now have no problems (6 months on).

Hi Spike

Just came across your post, thought I'd resurrect it after so long!

I'm going to have laser eye surgery with the same clinic and I notice your outcome has been good. I wanted to ask if you remember who your surgeon was? Was it Manek Patel?

How are your eyes going to date? Getting quite nervous myself! A few weeks to go!

This is the active thread, many of our stories are in there.

Also, did you really register just to ask about eye surgery on a computing forum :p?

Ahh thanks! I'll put my progress up there too. YES! I registered here solely because I wanted to ask Spike about that clinic, Google brought me here when looking for Uxbridge. I'll start posting on the other thread soon!

Having said that, I'm a geek, another appropriate forum!
