It would appear lorrys are capable of setting themselves alight? We have some garages/metal warehouses behind our house which a few people use as workshops. I think one chap runs a business out of one fiddling with cars. A blue lorry regulary comes in the morning and usually leaves in the evening but sometimes stays overnight.
I'd gone to bed as I have early starts in the workshops, whilst the girls I live with were having a girls night in of dvd's and the likes. I'm woken up at 2:30 am by screaming and 'Wake up there's a fire! everybody out of the house!'. They'd seen some flickering through the blind and then peeked through to their suprise to find the lorry ablaze.
As I stood up I could feel the heat coming off it through my window, as we're only single glazed and it looked rather large! By the time I'd jumped into my joggers and thrown a jacket and shoes on and grabbed whatever else I could out of my room (phone, camera & £5 note for some reason
) it had already started to get bigger. (I know I shouldn't have even bothered to grab anything other than clothes, being half naked and all)
Little parts were beginning to fall onto the roof of the garages between our house and the fire, but luckily these burnt themselves out. Houses next door and further down back right onto these garages but ours and the other neighbours stop short.
We got the neighbours up and out and 2 fire engines arrived around 2 minutes later. An ambulance and around 3 police cars also arrived shortly after. We've had the firebrigade out before, for what was a false alarm, they were quick to respond then too.
Girls next door to us are foreign students and were obviously fast asleep as they stumbled out a few minutes later, despite shouting through their letterbox. They suddenly **** themselves when they looked to their right down the adjoining alley and saw the flames.
It had begun to spread to the building behind it but luckily the fire service put it all out before it got out of control and reached any houses or harmed anyone. The girls were a bit shook up and it took the fire service till around 4am to finish the job.
Whilst it was about 30 foot away I've seen gas canisters lying around down there and god knows what could have been inside the lorry or any of the garages.
If my flatmates hadn't of still been awake I'm not sure if anybody would have spotted it. Some alarms did eventually begin to go off once everybody was outside but as you can see it had already begun to spread.
Of course I wouldn't tell you all this with out giving you something to look at! The view from the alley between out houses. I didn't really fancy getting much closer incase something did explode.
