Having been a pc gamer for nearly 10 years ive decided to slowly move over to console gaming as most pc FPS games are ports these days and it sure is a lot more relaxing sitting on the sofa rather than being hunched over a desk

Ive had a 360 for nearly 3 years but really only used it as a divx player, but today i decided to set my 360 up in another room and really try to get into it ,one thing that really hits me straight away is my awkwardness in using the controller, i guess im too used to KB/M combo but im determined to get to grips with it !

what settings should i be using with games regarding the controller ?, im right handed with slow thumbs lol, i know i guess i should just use the one that feels most comfy but to be honest right now they all feel bad

i dont really understand all this "southpaw" and what not, so which ones should i be using as a righty ? im currenly trying BF1943 and cod 4

thanks and any other tips to help me acclimatise to the game pad would be much appreciated :)

Default settings are usually the best using the Call of Duty 2 model. Other than that, just practise. I find the reverse true now after four years of consoles - I cannot use a keyboard and mouse for the life of me.

Just practice. I used to take about 10 minutes to aim now I can do it just like that after 5 or so months of COD'ding. As said before, use default options as they are probably the best. If playing FPS games play the campaign first to get to grips with the analogue sticks. :)

Leave everything at default and just play. It's hard as hell at first but speaking as an ex pc-only gamer, you do adapt eventually. I'd say i was pretty much used to it by the time i'd played through a single shooter (Uncharted).

Great shout on the Call of Duty 2 model ic1male, I'd really recommend the game too as it was what I played in order to get used to the controller when I initially moved over (mostly) from PC to 360 back in 2006 and found that after a good few hours I was getting better and better. Should be cheap as chips these days too...

As everyone has said though, practice makes perfect, I actually prefer playing FPS on a pad now, the rumble makes machine gunning my enemies even more fun! :)

I know the pain, I got a PS3 a month or so ago, for the first week, when playing BF1943 by the time I had the cursor on the enemy everyone else had moved onto the next game, then I could actually shoot the people - as long as I wasnt moving.

Now a month or so later, I can quite happily shoot people, and I can even shoot AND move at the same time! It just takes a lot of playing.

Most console FPS games have hideous amounts of auto-aim (MW2 is reeeeeeally bad for that!) so the learning curve shouldn't be that steep :p

thanks guys, been playing cod 4 tonight (will look for cod 2) , ive found that using southpaw sticks and default buttons works best for me, i feel slightly weird coz isnt southpaw for left handers ? lol

Yes... you're backwards :p

I used to play Legacy Sticks.... as its how the games I started playing on were. Took me a while after changing to Default Sticks to get used to it.

I can't play any FPS games on a pad unless I have the Y-axis inverted for the camera.....it just feels unnatural otherwise lol

try with the Y-axis normal and inverted, see which you find easier. you may notice straight away if it feels right or wrong

Im going to go with the party line, ive been playing games on the 360 now for about a year after being a PC gamer for 15 years. Right now i dont feel the 360 controller is an issue in any way but early on for the 1st few months i found it a tough learning curve.

The best thing to do is just find whichever control method suits you best, then go through something like Call of Duty 2 on Veteran difficulty. By the time you finish it you'll almost certainly be a crack shot and very comfortable with the controls :)

thanks for all the input guys , very much appreciated :)

Im really getting to grips with it now , as mentioned ive had the xbox for nearly three years and tried several times to "get into it" but never could, this time i think ive turned the corner and im actually enjoying playing it,the one dilema i have now is whether to buy BC2 on xbox and cancel my pc pre-order

if i play it on pc i'll just give up on the xbox due to the amount of time i'll be sat at the pc, but if i buy it on xbox will i get all the free unlocks for pre-ordering like the pc limited edition?

Aye. Been saying this for years.

Lock yourself in a room with COD2, switch it to Veteran and don't give up until you finish. There will be shouting, cursing and possibly tears but when you've finished you'll be a changed man.

Worked for me back in 2005/6 and will still work now :)

Ok to answer my own question , ive found that the 360 version of BC2 is also the limited edition so ive cancelled my pc pre-order and ordered it for console , theres no turning back now :D

Imo it plays better on the consoles tbh, i've racked up a dozen hours on both the console demos and the PC beta and the demos just seemed so much more.. fluid. I know the PC version was a beta but i was really put off, despite the advantage of dedicated servers it was laggier than the PC counterparts for example. To put it short; i doubt you'll be disappointed by your decision.

This is an interesting thread. I have both PC and PS3 and would never even look at an FPS on PS3, no mattter how much better etc it looked. The whole control system just seems so much less precise and natural. I used to play Doom quite a bit on PS1, but as soon as the third axis arrived on the console, I had to have a mouse in my right hand.

There are attractions to PS3 gaming though, not least of which would be playing it sat on the couch in perfect HD with surround sound. I'm struggling to get AvP to work properly on my HTPC and your thread has me wondering if I should have made the jump and bought it on PS3 instead...

No! ... Must...resist...

I'm also thinking of jacking in PC gaming, fell out with my clan and most of my real life mates play xbox. they ask me what my gamer tag is and I say I don't have a console and there like LOL WUT... I reply with I play on PC and they are like oh...

Anyway, back to standard English. I really concerned about the controller 2, I had a ps3 before but hardly played it, I think thats because all my mates have a xbox.

I'm thinking of buying an xbox because a PC graphics card is like £250-£320 for a decent one atm, may as well buy an xbox with 4 games for £190 lol

If all your friends play Xbox then its worth a shot, as you say, £190 with 4 games isn't a massive gamble, Plus there is a massive back catalogue of games for you to enjoy now. It takes some getting used to playing First Person Shooters on a console but after a while of playing something like COD2 on veteran it should just click. I moved over in 2006 and actually started to enjoy playing games more and played games that I might have otherwise missed out on if I'd stuck to being PC-Only. I'd say, go for it! :)

Oh and with regards to controllers not being "as accurate", it doesn't matter all that much, because everyone uses them so it's a level playing field, a true representation of skill!
