Do you think "id Tech 5" will be te next best engine?

meh tbh.

Still looks like people are made out of polished plastic.

Prefer grittier engines like stalkers/valves (but with improved models).

Haven't seen anything about it.

Is it going for "drab realisticness/brown everything" like UE3 or something a bit more imaginative?

Giz a link. :)

same as ut3/the current cod style engines really.

Very plastic looking people but very good model detail on them.

MEnt to have very good shadows though.

That's down to art design rather than the engine really.

Don't think it'll best CryEngine 3 for looks (on PC that is :p)

Might be able to compete with UE3 though, although not knowing much about the engine I dunno what I could say further..

That's is market really.

Crytek or ultra high end/realism, ut3/the id tech (doom)/quake engines for the mid rage.

The crytek engine is very good but I just wonder if it could power games without so many poxy trees LOL I wonder if it would be as good in a city based game.

some people have made gfx scence etc in an urban enviroment and it looks great.

The next crytech engine (3) in crysis 2 has a whole section set in new york so we'll see how it handles urban environments :D

Yup, iirc megatexture is where the whole map is one giant texture, which then can be changed on the fly for level of detail, although having said that I'm sure I have read somewhere that these texture files as in excess of 10GB each!

has been done before by quake wars.

was good but hardly spectacular.

The textures are no where near that size other wise your page file, ram and gfx ram would need a massive boost :p

My entirely personal opinion is that id just trade on their history, and have been over-rated for years. This 'new' (it's been talked about for bloomin' ages!) engine seems like more of the same. Remember how revolutionary the Doom III engine was meant to be?!

A little disconcerting that there is little new media for Rage. Didn't get released last year when it looked likely that it would be so I am really hoping for this year. Can't see it reaching us before q3 now. :(

Doom 4 is what might (will) challenge the high end rigs since although using the i.d.tech 5 engine it will provide up to three times the graphical richness. So this engine might be a contender after all.

Textures that size you're looking at over 100gb uncompressed. Even with compression I bet your looking at 360 games on multiple dvds and requiring a HD install to fit the texture. RAM isnt the issue as Tech 5 uses a funky texture streaming technique.
