I currently have a computer with

E7200 OC @ 3.0ghz
and a ATI 4870

I game at 1280 x 720 on my tv.

Would upgrading to the i5 make much of a difference?

If it is frame rate you are talking about, at your resolution probably won't. But it also depends on what game you are playing.

I think when using a low resoultion like that, any slowdown is usually down to the CPU rather then the GPU because it will be easy work for a modern GPU in almost all games. The CPU however still has to work out the same physics as it would if the game was running at 1920x1200.

That's exact what I was thinking when I was writing my post. When people are playing mmorpgs like WOW on a 30+ people raid, fast graphic card would not help if the CPU is not processing and sending the data over fast enough.
