Got an Acer laptop with Vista on it. For some reason when I tell it to boot from the CD using Windows 7 ULT it doesn't. Windows XP boots ok but for some reason doesn't detect the HDD when I go to install it?

I installed Windows 7 from Vista and it seemed to install ok until I restarted it and now it just loads to a blank screen

Any idea how I would completely format the HDD and just throw WIndows XP on it?

Cheers

Change the hard drive detection settings in bios...cant remember exact name but wifes laptop was the same (no hs detected) when i went to put xp on it till i changed setting.

No no not the boot order but another setting for hard drive...2 mins will check what its called...

Got it....Try changing the sata operation mode in bios from enhanced to compatable:)

Wouldnt have thought that would have caused a problem with W7 though

Worked a treat. Changed to IDE and it worked fine :) Thanks.

Windows 7 still don't boot from the CD though so im just gonna chuck XP on

hmmm, have you got an external usb drive handy??? saw some posts about other people having problems with Windows 7 not booting and a fix is to use another drive. I think something fishy is going on with certain types of drives and Windows 7 boot media.......

Thanks to all the replies. Managed to get Win 7 on after the XP install. I think it was something to do with the laptops C: partition being labelled as OEM. Used my Windows 7 Repair CD and formatted all of it using DOS ;)

Formatted all of it? How come you didn't do that in the first place instead of just doing a repair and then just stick Windows 7 on only? Just asking... :D
