Do all motherboards and PSUs fit any case?

I am thinking of upgrading my mobo and PSU in the next year or two and just checking to see if all motherboards and PSUs would fit into my MESH Midi-Tower case.

Nope.

Consult the atx spec at formfactors.org. Failing that, photograph the motherboard and put it up here and we can probably tell by looking at it if you're in luck or not.

It would probably be better to get a new case as well really, mesh boxes are not famous for being sensibly laid out.

As far as standards go, any atx complient motheboard will fit in any atx complient case which will hold any atx complient psu. Standards are good, but occasionally ignored. Not sure if mesh would adhere to them or not, I imagine sometimes they do and sometimes they dont.

You will need to check the size of your case, as some cases can only support m-atx boards, PSU should be ok.

I think they use std cases and not special one's like Dell use.

No, not all motherboards will fit in all cases, same with power supplies.

There is ATX and microATX motherboards (there are others too, but most are one or the other). Power supplies are the same again, however the microATX power supplies are slowly fading out, and you will struggle to find one over 400watts.

Do you have a link to your case so we can see what type it is?

your current board is a normal atx board so if that fits so should any other atx board.
without a pic of the inside of the case i couldn't be sure about the psu though but most standard size ones should fit but you would have to check about the extra long ones.

No, sorry, I haven't worked out which motherboard or PSU I will need yet.

I was just wondering whether I would have to worry about the size of each motherboard and PSU when I do search for them or not, but now I obviously do...

EDIT: I do have pictures of the inside of my case. The GPU in there is not my current one.

I wouldn't worry bout it too much, as long as you get a full size ATX case you will be fine when it comes to the motherboard. As to the power supply, near enough all modern cases will fit a a full ATX standard power supply. Most cases come with cage dimensions, just check those against the dimensions of the power supply.

I can see this question has already been answered but I am gonna answer it again, slightly differently.

MY very first PC (some thing from PC World, we got ripped off as we had NO IDEA what we were on about) had a HTPC case and so I could only fit mATX mobos. Some cases like Antec 300 won't fit miniITX motherboards (joke, I have the Antec 300).

Basically no, although most gaminga cases fit ATX motherboards now.

good spot that man

i was looking for overclocking info for him in another thread so have seen quite a lot of this board tonight :)

Assuming the spec is the one in his sig :p:eek:

lol i never thought of that :)
but i can see from his pic posted now that it is :)
and from the pic it looks like just about any psu will fit :)
might be an idea to move your optical drive down a bay and try to put some of the unused cables in the space above it

Awesome. :)

So any ATX motherboard would fit in there perfectly?

EDIT: Come to think of it, it must be quite tricky to install a new motherboard; having to unplug a lot of cables, remember where they go, unscrewing screws...

just about all the cables only fit into the connector they are meant for, the only tricky ones are the ones for the power and reset switches and front led's but they are usually marked on the cable and theres a diagram in the motherboard manual.

things could change in the next year or two.

Oh.

Surely the ATX motherboards and PSUs I need for a Core 2 Quad (and overclocking it) will still be availiable (and cheaper) in 12 months? That's all I am looking to do to make sure that my PC is good enough for gaming for the next 4-5 years. ;)
