AM3 to i5?

I currently use a AM3 duel core at 2.6ghz on a AM2+ motherboard using 2 gb of ddr2 ram

Should I upgrade to a AM3 mobo with 4gb of ddr3

or..

i5 with 4gb of ddr3 with the required mobo?

using the stock cooler sorry its 3.01Ghz - I bought it as 2.6Ghz but it was 3.01Ghz from stock...

I was just wondering what kind of difference performance wise it would make since DDR3 is so pricey I would imagine the performance gains would be high with a decent mobo

Performance gaing from DDR3 is a few percent at most, unless you're running RAM benchmarks.

Simplest option for improvement would be dropping a tri or quad core into your existing motherboard.

I'll keep that in mind, are the latest quad core Am3's any good?

I only ask since my brother uses a Am2 socket quad and it feels sluggish in games.

Will probably be quad since my college course makes heavy use of after effects

AMD tech is not slow at all, Intel is just faster in a majority of applications/games.

AM3 still excellent run and you can upgrade any CPU speed as AM2+ mobo can support AM3 are you throw out with your money for buy i5??

only reason really is if you seriously overclock not mess about a couple of applications theres nothing in it.

the amd does some things better than amd (gaming in general is smoother on amd ) intels do photoshop and encoding better . neither are slouches.

AMD are consistently cheaper than Intel, yet in my experience Intel do better quality products. (It is expected because of the price jump I suppose)

Only if the motherboard has both DDR2 and DDR3 slots.

DDR2 and DDR3 are NOT interchangable.

Why bother spending so much money on a new rig? Upgrade your CPU if you need more threads working, Phenoms II are excellent processors. Get a decent cooling and overclock it. Throw another 2GB of RAM into it and you have a well performing setup for your college work (whatever it is). I think that's the cheapest way to upgrade from what you currently have. What mobo have you got at the moment?
