I've just been getting a quote insuring my car and having my wife as a named driver excluded most companies. She's an editor for a publishing company and the agent said that it was her occupation which was causing most companies to not insure me. What's that all about? Any idea why publishing is considered risky? She writes books. She's not part of the paparazzi???

They do seem to have a strange way of calculating premiums sometimes.

I was doing some quotes before and discovered that the cheapest occupation on Churchill is "Student". Bell charge £200 extra if I keep my car on the drive as opposed to the street, and £400 extra if I keep it in the garage

Probably because a higher percent of publishers crash compared to other professions?

Perhaps due to a busy attitude has better things to do than be on the road and is in a rush.
Perhaps day dreaming about stories.

Who knows, who cares all it is is stats.

What if someone doesn't like your wifes books?

bingo, probably the reason imho.

Say she edits/publishes a book that really really offends some kind of ethnic group for instance, maybe it's some cartoons/parody of mohammed or something.

Makes her more likely to be a target of vandelism etc.

I know it sounds far fetched, but more than likely the reason.

The similarity to journalist probably isn't that far off, in the ins companies eyes.

Its got to be based on hard data hasnt it?

Perhaps lots of publishers, die or get into major accidents.

Maybe there getting confused with publisher/author, thinking your wife has an unreliable income from writing stuff, instead of the more reliable from editing it.
