and I noticed a horrific cut! For those who have it, ( I'm watching the directors cut but it should be around the same time) go to

12.21

On the wide shot Ripley is holding the cup at waist level and then it goes in to a mid close up and she is holding it at boob level :eek:

Then...(it gets worse)

At 12.35 she puts the cup down in a wide shot, it cuts back to a mid close up and the cup is in her hand! WTF RIDLEY :p

Now call me pedantic if you wish but because I do quite a bit of editing myself I pick up on these things, very poorly done :(

Let's hope the rest of the film is done more professionally as I've never actually watched Alien :o

Makes the film look amateur :(
 
Doesn't that technically fall under continuity?

I can't say that I tend to notice thing like that, I guess I don't really look for it, just enjoy the film. It's strange though, because I'm usually such a pedant!
 
The film itself is ace.

Alien = great suspense thriller
Aliens = Great action horror
Alien resurrection = pants
Alien vs Predator = Good, cheesey horror
Alien vs Pedator Requiem = crap

Well it's the fault of the person assigned to continuity, the director for not seeing it on the monitor and the person in the cutting room not working around it (although he/she may have been left with no choice as the rushes simply weren't cuttable in a 'viable' way)

You forgot Alien 3 which first cut was almost criminal.

I like Resurrection far more than AVP.

Fingers crossed Predators doesn't suck and Ridley Scott does a good 5th Alien film :)

The proper version of Alien 3 with the missing bits in with the alien trapped in the tank made a great film.

Alien was and will be a fantastic sci fi horror for years to come. It builds up proper fear and suspense unlike modern examples.

Aliens was a really entertaining survival/action film. While it wasn't frightening in the way that the first was frightening it was certainly a heart thumping experience with the tension and action rolled into one.

Alien Ressurection, kind of like a poor version of Aliens really. Its not down right awful, its just doesn't have that wow factor really. To much focus on action and a lack of 'creepy' moments.

AVP - It had promise but it just failed in execution.
AVp 2 - Just shambles, its a teen horor/survival flick with the Aliens & Predators instead of a mass serial killer.

Its such a shame that Cameron scrapped his possible Alien 5 script because they persued the AVP Films tbh.

Sorry for derailing the thread a bit :P

Nope...i've posted before on various Alien related threads why it's my favorite. The short of it is I look at it from the point of view of the film David Fincher wanted to make before Sigourney Weaver threw her weight around and changed much of the movie. I haven't got the time to go into it, but if you search my old posts in some random alien thread, I go into a bit of detail :D

Also, the alternate cut makes it a far superior movie. As someone else has posted, there is a whole section where they actual trap the alien but it's set free by one of the prisoners.
 
Awesome film. One of the things which always amazes me when i watch Alien is its age. I often forget just how old the film is.

1979. I mean its 31 years old, its almost a third of a century ago, incredible. Where does the time go eh.

Indeed, while it's not my fav it is still a great film :)
 
One of the best horrors ever made, if not the best, and my favorite film. I think it's aged far better than Aliens and Alien 3 and I can't wait for it to come on Blu-ray.

:confused: I think Aliens has ages really well, the effects are great because they're not dodgy early CGI like Alien³ has. The only dodgyness come from the model work, which is still very very good.

I agree with others in that the 'proper' cut of Alien³ is a far better film than the theatrical release
