Super Special Southern Meet of Ultimate Win (Hampshire Mini Meet) IV

Yes, we can have a "secure" corner, and an "insecure" corner for those who feel they have something to compensate for ;)

Well on second thoughts about the might 1.4L Polo, would it be highly recommended for me to bring my girlfriends Hello Kitty Mini again? Surely the HK seatbelt covers reduce it's power to about equal to a Polo?

In addition to my suspension falling off and my vanos rattling like a bag of bolts

Wait... you have VANOS rattle!? Thats pretty serious, is this not something you picked up before you bought it?

I'm getting my VANOS seals replaced next week with the redesigned ones as a preventative thing.

Does it rattle all the time, or just when cold? If it's just when cold it's probably nothing to be too concerned about.

It doesn't really rattle when cold at all, it's when it's warm and idling and then all the time I think (but you can't tell when actually driving the car, only when at a standstill and either outside the car or with the door/window open), but I have other ideas about this now tbh (timing chain tensioner and or guide), after some more serious diagnosis today with a little help from someone else. And no I did not pick it up when I bought the car, I would not have bought it if I had. It's only really evident when it's properly warmed through. I did check the engine for rattles and such, but it was cold then and I didn't hear anything untoward in the cabin when warm (you need to open the door to hear the rattle really). This is my own fault for not really listening outside of the car when it was warm after my test drive. However, if it was as noticable as I think it is now, I would have noticed it ...perhaps it's gotten worse or maybe I have just become attuned to the fact it's there now.

When I first looked at and drove the car I knew there were a few obvious issues, but nothing other than wear or tear that couldn't be easily fixed. I did not find anything I believed to be serious, now it seems I might have more trouble than I thought. Anyway, take a look at my other post for more info. If this thing is in fact really serious and expensive ...then I am not sure what to do right now, might have to get rid and cut my losses, but then who would buy it anyway, I can see it now "yea mate, I bought this 3 weeks ago ....it runs like a dream but I am umm err getting rid of it already ...innit" ...not to mention the fact I don't think I could knowingly sell a knacker to someone, I'm not that sort of person really. Hopefully this is just me painting worst case scenario, but that’s just my nature so …we’ll see.

I know my idea about the timing chain tensioner sounds a bit ...illogical in that it is only really noticeable when warm and not cold, and it would do it regardless if it was a chain ...but as I understand it, the M62TU is a single VANOS engine, and the unit is to the left of the engine (when facing the car) ...the noise I have can be heard and felt when touching the engine to the right more than the left. Also, I don't really have any of the other symptoms people talk about associated with a knackered VANOS unit, no noticable power or torque loss etc.

I am really not at all certain what this noise is, I will have to wait for BMW to tell me that really.

Anyway I just made a post with more detail in my 540i thread. to say the least I am getting rather concerned now.
