hello.
i have lived in this house since last year. i was sharing with a brother and sister last year and they left without paying the council tax. now the amount owed has gone to a bailiff and i am getting letters saying they will come and take stuff from here.
The problem is that i do not owe any money, and its the girl that did not pay. I have called them and given them her phone number and told the person responsible that i do not wish to be contacted anymore about this and they should take it with her.
Anything else i can do? It's not my fault that she hasn't paid.

it's not down to individuals to pay it, it's down to the household, sadly, it looks like you'll all be stuck, but as you're the one still living there, you'll bear the most of the issue as it's easier for them to chase you :(

but this is just my own thoughts, I could be completely wrong, and hope I am, for your sake

Council Tax is paid by the household, not the people in it. You might be entitled to a discount if you're the only one living there (I think it's 25%). But you need to go in to your local council office and sort it out. If keep refusing to pay you're facing court (and a CCJ on your credit file which will knacker you for years) and the possibility of prison.

the problem is that the account has left the council tax and has gone into a collection agency. i tried contacting the council to sort the payment directly and they told me to talk to the agency. they are asking for £200 more.

It's only £200. Pay it. The punishment for non-payment of council tax is at best a CCJ and at worst a short spell inside.

i have sent her a message again asking her to sort it out. will probably ask her brother to chip in as well as its his name on the account as well.
i know you guys are right and i have to bite the bullet myself :(

you say it's only £200, but £200 is a lot to someone who doesn't have it

The problem is there's no other way around it now. It's past the point where you can ring up and pay in installments or some other arrangement. It MUST be paid, in full, soon. If it isn't it's only going to get worse and the OP's the only one responsible for it. The other people don't live there any more, it's no longer down to them to pay it and that's how a court will see it too unless you've got a signed contract from when they lived there saying they'd pay their bit. You need to find that money somehow or you'll be facing really serious consequences. The fact that it's already gone to bailiffs is a very bad sign and that'll show on your credit file for the next few years.

I've just had to fork out £200 for mine when they finally took off my partners student discount that I told them about last year. I've not worked since November and have absolutely no money so I had to borrow it from family to stop them taking it any further.

The only way you can do it is to pay it yourself and then try to get the money out of them later. Delaying payment of council tax will simply not work.

No offence but nice family you got there, i knew a friend of a friend in a simillar situation, they had bailed and left him 2-3 months of rent to pay.
