Unusually low 3DMark Vantage results for a 5850

I have been suspecting that my Asus 5850 has not been performing as well as it should for some time now. I finally got 3D Mark Vantage, and ran the full suite of benchmarks on 'performance' - spec is in sig.

I only got ~14500 marks for the GPU and 14000 overall. When I compared my results to those with a similar spec, there is a deficit of around 4-5000 marks. I am on the 10.3 preview drivers at the moment, though I had a similar lack of performance on the 10.2s as well. Clocks are at stock - though will try overclocking later. I'm just going to run the Dirt 2 benchmark to see what I get.

Any ideas?

Dirt 2 results

Ok, all at full settings, 4x AA (only in game), no VSync, at 1600x900 I'm getting 92.8 average FPS, and 71 minimum FPS. I'm not sure whether it's on DX11 or not though. It doesn't ever give me any indication, and there's nothing in the benchmark XML document about it.

Your vantage score is perfectly fine for a stock 5850, your CPU lets you down a bit in vantage but even so the GPU score is not effected to much by CPU performance.

Dirts runs in DX11 by default so your performance in it is excellent, oveclock the card for max performance.

They are mine 10.3 preview 725/1000 (Vantage 1.01 think it is)

well for dirt 2, go to you graphics settings, under preset settings( i think thats what its called) set it to ultra which then enables dx11, also set the AA to 8x, make sure you back out of the settings to make them apply, then go back in and run the benchmark

dirt 2 is set to high quality by default (which isnt dx11), well it was with mine at least.

Ah, so I'm just being weird. Again. I need to do some more overclocking on the CPU and RAM, but first the GPU.

How do you guys stress test the GPU? Furmark? Or just rerun 3DMark?

HyperST, you're right, it wasn't set to Ultra - now I can actually set 8x AA and high Post-Processing.

With the Ultra preset, and 8x AA, min is 56.5FPS, and avg is 77.7FPS.

Now going to do some overclocking, and see what's what. :D

Thanks for the help/advice/kind words so far.

Tip, If your using the Asus smart doctor, ditch it and go with MSI afterburner, much better and you can set your own fan profiles.

Just steadily increasing the OC, and I've got to 918 core, and 1150 memory - and it's yielded the best results so far - 58.7 Min and 84.4 avg.

How come MSI's is better? I know it looks better, but the Asus allows me to increase the VCore - which in fact, I needed to do because of the grey screen issue (also by changing to ganged memory mode).

Think I'll settle on this OC for now, do some more later.

Just run another suite (on same settings as before) of 3DMark Vantage - now the system score is at nearly 15500 marks and the GPU is at 17000 - thanks for the input folks - so just some merry overclocking - and the performance is there. I never noticed that much difference with my 4890 when I was overclocking that, so hadn't bothered doing the 5850 yet - glad I did. :D

1.1V, and to be honest I haven't seen the temps yet - though it idles at 42°C (just finished playing Half Life 2 - so not a true reading).
