Needing help regarding my education

I left school at the end of 4th year and since then I haven't really done much at all. It's now been 2 years, I'm 17 and all my friends seem to be moving on and going to college/university. It really has hit me hard and I regret not staying on and getting my highers.

Without highers, I stand no chance of getting into university. I had a look at a few colleges further south (mainly Glasgow) because Inverness has a pretty crap choice of subjects in my opinion.

Really what I'm asking is - is it worth the hastle? Glasgow Met. has some nice courses that I wouldn't mind checking out, but I'm not sure if it's wise applying because I'd need money to support myself down there and pay for a place to live.

I could perhaps work for a year and save money, then try move down. Alternatively, I could go back to Inverness and try find something that interests me, get whatever grades I need and then move out and hopefully study at a uni in 1 or 2 years time.

I really am lost and literally have no one else to talk to about this. I pretty much shafted myself as soon as I left school and now I'm in a real mess and don't really see any future for myself at the moment. My parents won't stand for me idling about another year and I don't really want to either. :(

Work with education as many people including myself do.
If I wanted to I could move out on the money I'm earning right now alongside 3 a levels, i'd have to get rid of my car and stop saving for uni though.

I've gotta ask though, what have you been doing for 2 years? Just dossing about or something?

Hmm, that's a good idea tbh. I feel a bit silly for not thinking of that myself now. I'll have a look and see what options are avaliable for me on that front.

Pretty much, yeah. My mother being ill and my family not getting along too well, paired with some of my personal problems hasn't helped, but I can't excuse myself for being an idiot and leaving school and being a bit lazy at times.

I'm looking to set things straight, but I need a bit of guidance which is why I made this thread. I've not really got anyone else to talk to about this stuff which probably tells it's own story of how lame my life has been these last 2 years. :o

Thanks for ideas so far guys.

As above really, try and get some 'basic' grades behind you, then see what you can get into. Probably good to get a part-time job somewhere to get some cash to treat yourself every so often and do grades on the side :)

I'm kinda of debating re-doing GCSE's or doing something in as an A-Level equivalent as my GCSE grades werent exactly amazing...

Hell one of my worst grades was IT yet I've been doing it since I've left school practically :p

You mentioned going to uni. Do you have a particular uni or course in mind? If you do you could always get in touch with the uni and talk to there admissions guy and they would gladly tell you what they would need you to do to gain admission to that course. Be it getting some highers or some sort of access course.

I don't actually know a lot about universities, but a lot of my friends seem to be going to Edinburgh and one of them is most certainly going to Napier. A few will be in Aberdeen too but I can't remember the name of the uni.

To those of you working and taking A-Levels/Highers, how many subjects are you studying?

From that sounds of it, you left in year 10, so won't have finished your GCSE's. Perhaps do your GCSE's, then do some kind of BTec in college? BTec's are worth quite a lot in UCAS points, so hopefully you'll be able to get into uni.

Tbh, it depends how much work you are willing to put in. Will your parents support you if you go back into education?

Ahh I suppose we've all made mistakes.

Ever considered apprenticeship?
I know guys who've gone out with essentially worthless gcses, a load of E's and U's and gotten apprenticeships.

Infact, what do you want to do? What are your passions in life?

Robert Gordons? Or did they make the right choice and come to the proper University instead :p.

The name is familiar, so it must be Robert Gordons.

My parents would like me back in education and have said they'd support me. I'm just not completely sure what or where I want to study yet.

I'm honestly not sure yet. The only thing I'm moderately skilled at is working with computers. I've never really tried anything else.

I could apply for the HNC Computing course at Inverness, but I know one of the tutors in that department and I don't get along too well with him.

Getting something like a HNC / HND may allow you to skip a few years of uni, and enter into the 3rd year of a program on occasion. All in all, could work out you're only 1 year behind your mates, which isn't so bad.
