best upgrade after 9800GTX+

I run a E8400 at 3.00GHz with 4 gig of ram and I was wondering what GPU would be a good upgrade to my Zotac 9800GTX+ without being overkill due to my CPU?

Thanks

Defo overclock your cpu as advised above. I would say if you like high eye candy enabled in games and are using a 22" monitor or above then grab yourself a 5850 if your budget allows.

+1 for a (sensible) overclock.

However I got the distinct impression from most people that whilst a CPU can bottleneck a GPU, it's not by as much as you might think. If you want top-end graphics, get a top-end video card.

I would also recommend an HD5850.

Thanks guys, I am playing at 1680x1050. Regarding pushing the overclocking of my E8400 to 4.0Ghz I am still unsure what settings are safe. My mobo is an Abit IP35 Pro XE.

I'm hardly the most knowledgable person here regarding PC's but I do agree that in some cases the difference is minimal. The articles I have read seem to be suggesting that you do not need to have extremely highly overclocked cpu's to get required performance from the video card. I've seen plenty of i7 at stock with high end cards running dishing out the desired fps.

My laptop is pretty much same spec and it still runs everything at 1680x with max settings and 4x AA with great fps so I wouldn't be in a hurry to upgrade. CPU will be fine for all but the high end multi GPU setups i.e. 5970 and even there it would still do fairly well.

I change my mind everyday and today I think that the new generation is very poor value.

From what I can gather apart from dx11 a 5850 is like 10-20 fps only faster than a 4890 1gb in a lot of stuff ! and a 4890 isn't much faster than a 4870 and so on.

I have come to the conclusion that a second hand 4890 is the best value at the moment if you can bag one for £90-£100 I certainly don't think the 5850 is good value on any level.

5850 should be around £150 not £230 + doesn't take long to find it's only beating a 4890 in a lot of things by a small margin and certainly not a double the price margin.

The only card worth buying at new price currently is the 5770 it's the only card just about worth it's price tag.

I'm pretty much on the same boat. 5850 and 5870 prices are way too high. 5770 is a pretty decent card for their prices, however it's hard to justify paying another £120 just to move from 9800GTX+(well, GTS250 basically) onto 5770, as the performance improve would be like moving from 4850 onto 4870...

Unless I can sell my 9800GTX+ at £60 (which I doubt I can, and I bought it new at just under 1 years ago at around £105), I don't think I would consider the 5770...

I agree...the damn 5850 should be priced at £150-180, NOT over £220. But I guess they got the excuse of blaming the price rise of the DRAM...

OC the 5770 up to 4890 and its a very worthwhile card. Less heat and power, newer tech, DX11 etc. If buying a new card I have to recommend a 5770. The 5830\5850\5870 are not good value at all now. I dont know what Ati are playing at but for me they are killing their sales of the supposed high end cards by overpricing them.:(

Judging by the nVidia hate on these forums I'm guessing a good number here did just that :D
Na...I think majority of those people just mistaken nvidia trolling as the latest fashion or trend or a cool thing to do :D

I'm no ATI nor Nvidia zealot, I just buy whatever is the best value for the performance. I know lots or people (inluding a certain ATI fanboy 'we know who' that troll nvidia at every chance he gets) are dizzing Fermi when nothing 'solid' about it is even out yet. I would love to see nvidia pull it off releasing some better performance budget cards than ATI, so I will have the pleasure of seeing all the people onboard the nvidia trolling train ('we know who' in particular) to zip it, and find a hole to crawl into and hide for their embrassment :D

From consumer point of view, I really hope nvidia do succeed. Cause we all know competition means better performance and value products at more competitive prices for us to buy.

I also think that a lot of people that normally support NVIDIA all the way are just a bit frustrated with waiting....and perhaps nervous that it could turn into a R600 fiasco?

Fair enough but that doesn't explain the trolling, sniping and general lack of respect, etc.

Anyhow back on topic...

Aslong as you stay under 1.4v vcore and 1.4v VTT (Sometimes known as FSB voltage/term) you can push that E8400 as far as it will go stable safely enough, if your really worried about killing it then stay below 1.3625v. A decent air cooler would be reccomended for best results. The CPU would be fine for anything that doesn't make good use of quad cores with most if not all the GPUs out atm, the only time you'd really suffer is in games that can make good use of 4+ threads in combination with running a 5970, 58xx crossfire or an nVidia GTX285 SLI setup. In games that only use 1-2 threads you'd probably get away with the E8400 @ 3.4-3.5+ gig even with a 5970.

As what others have said think your card is fine for your resolution. Just start clocking the e8400 :)

Off-topic: What was it like on these forums when r600 didn't live up to the hype? In other places it was pretty much pro-nvidia till the 4000 series came out with support pretty much see-sawing with whatever company is on top at the time.
