PSN goes all Millennium Bug on us

This is just stupid.

I'm guessing they're not going to be able to fix this properly until tomorrow, and then we'll get a firmware update.

I'm sure there will be some loop-hole in the law where you could get a new ps3 or at least have an on site repair or compensation as it was designed with a flaw. A simple one to fix yet still a flaw that has caused inconvenience. Imagine you was a multi-million pound business run on ps3 phats. Think of the lost profits today could have caused

You mean like all the dev PS3's that have been borked today? Leading to a countless loss of development time? ;)

As you may be aware, some customers have been unable to connect to the PlayStation Network today. This problem affects the models other than the new slim PS3.
We believe we have identified that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system.

Errors include:

The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.

When the user tries to sign in to the PlayStation Network, the following
message appears on the screen; “An error has occurred. You have been
signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)”.

When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears
on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; “Failed to install
trophies. Please exit your game.”

When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the
Internet, the following message appears on the screen; “The current date
and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)”

Users are not able to play back certain rental video downloaded from the
PlayStation Store before the expiration date.

We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.

As mentioned above, please be advised that the new slim PS3 is not affected with this error. We are doing our best to resolve the issue and do apologize for any inconvenience caused.

surely at somewhere in the world it is now 2/3/10 has no information been passed as to if this has fixed itself?

The clock system is set to UTC (in other words GMT). So when it struck midnight here and PS3s borked, they also borked everywhere else in the world at that same time. e.g. 8am in Tokyo, 7pm in New York, etc.

We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours
Translates to; We're crossing our fingers and hoping it'll fix itself naturally when tomorrow ticks over on the calendar, or we've got a truly gargantuan problem.

They hope it should be fixed with-in the next 24 hours?

You mean Sony have their fingers crossed it auto fixes itself tonight. :D

bit vague with the truth, more honest to say more than 50% of owners (surely more than half of worldwide owners have an old style phat, of which the majority are affected?).

I reckon if it fixes itself tonight PSN will explode from millions of people logging on within a matter of minutes :)

Trying to soften the scale of the problem with carefully chosen words.

Less typing, more fixing imo.

Doesn't really suprise me if ppls trophies/save games have all been wiped and that the online service has crashed. How typical of Sony really, what a useless pathetic online service they offer.

The only game I use to play sometimes online was sf4 which they destroyed with a patch and never bothered fixing. My PS3 has been collecting dust ever since then. Sony are a proper useless bunch of ******s if you ask me.

Weird how something as simple as a bug with the clock could break so much stuff. I hope it fixes itself after tomorrow, or else Sony are gonna be stuck with a lot of recalled consoles. They can issue firmware updates, but not automatic ones, so a lot of people would end up taking the console back to the store.

Nice kneejerk reaction there, maybe you should read up properly?
Slim units are all working fine on the PSN, it's **** all to do with the PSN, it's the internal clock of the PS3 itself that's to blame.
Don't let that stop you ripping into the PS3 though, it's fun watching people have ill-informed rants based soley on heresay and assumption.
