Doing a self service on my Golf GT TDi @ 149K

Nope don't empty anything, Just get the old one off & dispose of it Properly.
Fill the new one up with Clean derv & fit it, Double check all your pipes & connections & then get somebody to tow you around the perimeter road or summit.
Stick it in Third for starters & just stick your foot Flat to the floor, Bare in mind though that it will take Ages to pull through, Like Over a mile maybe.
Once you here it splutter to start in Third then just drop to Second & jump start it up, toot your horn for the Tower to stop, Unhook & Enjoy.

This method means that the car will start First click in the mornings & not take an age to clear an air bubble you left in there through using the Other methods.

Never & I mean Never touch the rubber pumps under the bonnet as they are Never used so when you do use them they split & let air in. ;)

Trust me on this though mate as I know my old dervs.

Cool, thanks, I shall keep this in mind :)

When you say stick your foot to the floor, im assuming you mean the accelarator pedal yeah to pump fuel through?

Yes, Sorry I am only barely literate. :o

If you have the car in 3rd then it won't be to much of a strain on the tow vehicle & hold the accelerator right down.
It doesn't normally turn the car over quick enough to get a good jump so when you here it start to splutter chuck it in second & Nail that throttle.

is that procedure "healthy" for the timing belt?
I mean older 8v engines (like this one here) might be fine with this, but will this be ok with let's say a 16v engine?

Now if you had put it in Gear & been towed it would have started, You think it won't because you have to tow it for a fair distance but it does.
I Never use the plaggy pump or the Battery to push it through I just do the job properly & then get my mate to tow me down Cov road behind his truck.

Ta for the tip - Didn't know that. It was our only car at the time, so wouldnt have been very easy to get a tow. One to remember though!

Which oil do you think I should go for? apparently I have to stick genuine VW stuff in @ £35 a pop.

Seems abit pricey, im sure iv used another *good brand* in the past.

I must have been lucky on my 306. Use the squishy pump thing, few pumps, job done :D

Could just slacken the unions off the injectors and crank the air out too. Only on ye olde derv though.

Use the squishy pump thing (a technical term surely :D) off a Pug at work for sucking diesel through on anything i change the filter on. Get down the scrappy and cut one off a car...job done, much easier than all this towing malarkey.
:)

Just spent £69 and bought

Oil - 5w40 5L - (Approved for VW diesel engines)
Oil Filter
Fuel Filter
Air Filter
Pollen Filter

:)

Use halfords oil for PD engines, its about £35.

As for the fuel filter, forget all this priming, putting it in full and towing around. Simply remove the old filter (self explanitory when lookin at it) and pop the new one in empty then reconnect the pipes, turn on the ignition and it will self prime, you wont have to force fuel anywhere with pressure or towing.

Is this true? Excellent if it is, can anybody confirm?

No i made it up for fun!

Yes its true, i service all my own cars, my partners car, my mothers car, my sisters cars etc. Most are TDi's and ive done all the fuel filters in the same way. Modern diesels are self priming, none of this pumpy bulb like on an outboard motor for a boat!

yep its true just cycle the ignition a few times, modern diesels like yours have an electric pump in the tank and fuel is not sucked by a mechanical pump on the cambelt.
Just make it a bit quicker by filling the filter with diesel on fitting.
towing will not make any difference to this engine as its not got a mechanical fuel pump.
Regards
Andy

Lol, :D I wasnt questioning your work dont worry :p

Thanks for the info, makes things much earlier.

No worries, you should be able to do the whole lot in about 30 mins. Dont forget a T25 torx bit/driver for the undertray.
