Poland - Warsaw or Krakow?

Krakow is a must (say it Krak-ov NOT krak-ow) :)

The salt mines are stunning and Auschwitz is also a must. Both very different things to be doing, but at least you will have done something other than just get lashed. Have a walk around Krakow too, it's lovely!!!

Also the taxi drivers will try and rip you off, especially if you consider taking one to Auschwitz. We just took the bus :D

Lots of stunning ladies there, but no doubt full of English these days on their stupid stag do's acting like retards. I went just before the inlfux of English and it rocked, but then again being able to speak the language fluently and sounding like a proper englishman has its advantages, especially when it comes to the ladies (well it did back then :D)

Went to Krakow last weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it - the salt mine is amazing!! (and I'm not normally a fan of just walking round places and admiring the scenery!!)

Everything is dirt cheap, great food, great drink (try the warm beer! :p) and travel will cost you peanuts!

I can recommend the Andels hotel for accomodation - fantastic room with a great location right outside the big shopping centre and train station and about 5 minutes walk from the very centre of town!!!

StevieP

ps. having said that I can also recommend Wroclaw having gone there in 2008 for my stag-do - albeit for VERY different reasons!!!! ;)

Warsaw still had a communist feel to it when I went in 2005-2006 (spent New Years there).... The Old Town area of Warsaw is nice tho but if I were to choose then it would be Krakow where I went last year.

Been to both and I am going back to Krakow this year. Just a nicer place overall.

Krakow is ace have been several times. Haven't been to Warsaw but understand it is not a patch in terms of tourist experience (assuming that is what you are after).

Went to Bratislava in Slovakia, Warsaw and Krakow all on the same trip a few years back.

I really like Bratislava the best I think, but Krakow was an extremely close second. Warsaw is a bit erm..... it's not that bad but it's not amazing either. Old town (which is actually a reconstruction) is worth a look and there's a cool Bavarian pub that serves enormous plates of meat but I don't think I'd go back.

Went to Krakov last year for a stag do - brilliant fun. Loads of clubs and pubs and the locals are generally friendly. If you're into guns then this is one of the only places in the EU that you can shoot them. I had the pleasure of firing a pump-action shotgun, an AK-47, and UZI and even a magnum! Sweet!

Four nights is £400+ in August for Krakow, about £250 for Warsaw, according to Expedia.

I really need to find a site that gives you an idea of prices throughout the year though, as our dates are flexible.

Yep, walking round Krakow is nice, and Auschwitz is interesting (if not disconcertingly pleasant in my experience)... But I'd have to say that the salt mine wasn't really that good.... There were one or two mildly impressive things such as the big hall and the never ending staircase, ( I think I'm remembering the right mine), but overall, it was quite gimmicky and most of the tour was just looking at random stuff that had been put there for tourists to look at - the random sculptures, old mine scene, and guide telling us how good the air was to breathe and how we were getting the healing magic air for free with our ticket... Sure if you've got a bit of spare cash/time go for it, but it wasn't really that great in my opinion.

Book flights and hotel seperately. Expedia is always the most expensive.

When we went to Krakow 3 years ago our flights were £40 each and our hotel for 3 nights was £70 (special offer 3 nights for price of 2)

I don;t know where you are flying from but from Tues to Sat return Ryanair do flights from 3 or 4 airports in August for £79.95. Easyjet is similar. keeping to your £250 budget for Warsaw and having £160 to spend on 4 nights you can stay at any of these:

http://www.krakow-hotels.1bigeurope.com/search.aspx

Plenty of 3 and 4 star hotels for less than £160 for 4 nights.

If you want budget then even cheaper. For £310 you can have 5 star luxury!

I can't think what the name of our hotel was but we had an apartment each with lounge, kitchen and bathroom.:D

Just google krakow hotels and book well in advance. Same with the flights. The earlier you book the cheaper they are.

Poznan is pretty and interesting, claims to have been the first city settled by the nomadic tribes of the region, liked it a lot when I went there 10 years ago. No idea about prices tho.

Cheers, I'll do some research, always assumed Expedia was reasonable on price!

Fatal mistake. I have checked it on every holiday with the gf and 2 or 3 boys trips away every year and have yet to use it to book anything!

I'll assume you can use Google to find all the cheap airlines to krakow so have a look at these for hotels:

There's loads more if you google "krakow hotels"

I must admit we tend to book our lads trips off season going away in Feb/Mar and then Sep/Oct. If you can plan a year ahead, it gets even cheaper.

To us, a weekend away including flights, hotel, food and drinking from 11am till 4am next day for under £150 is much better than going away in this country,. I;ve had nights out in Newcastle which have cost me £100.

The best we ever had was first time to prague about 6 years ago.

Flights £19 inc taxes
Hotel (3*) for 3 nights £40
Daily money on drink and food and fags £20 to £30

Total spend £150 ish.

Of course they have all been fun and I can recommend pretty much all the eastern european capitals for a good weekend away.

Been to both (Warsaw many times) and depends on what you are after. Warsaw has a lovely old town for bars and resturants but that's about it in terms of tourist type places. The main part of the city is just like any other euro city but outside of town it does get fairly eastern block looking.

But if you are after nightlife then Warsaw is fantastic, loads of really good bars and clubs, all busy enough throughout the week but none too expesive or over packed.

Karkow is also pretty good for nightlife but as others have said above it has a lot more to offer in terms of stuff to do/see during the day.
