So what have you lot got against golfs?!

so you can't completely rely on reliability statistics to reflect build quality.

But that is EXACTLY what is used to measure quality! :p

As a metric, Ford of Europe's quality has been terrible of late, slightly improved over 2009, but still well below where it should be, and it's the Focus that is suffering. In contrast, Ford NA's quality has shot up, and if I remember correctly surpasses Honda/Toyota/japs etc.

This metric of quality the industry uses is down to TGW, or Things Gone Wrong. If to yourself its down to cabin feel, road noise etc. That's because of the design not matching your expectation/needs. The only issue I have is that where the Golf is better in terms of interior etc, isn't justified the price. The better materials and slow close mechanisms etc amount to 3 figures per vehicle at most.

Using road noise is a really stupid way of percieving quality - I guarantee a Mondeo is quieter on a motorway than a Polo or most Golfs....which is built better? Which has a more solid interior?

It would be like judging a car's quality based on 0-60 times - the only time when that would be valid is if it exploded before getting to 60 :p

Aye, mines started costing a few pennies as you anticipated :p Nothings really "broke" bar a clutch pedal (!) and the clutch itself now... I spent a bit on maintenance such as cambelt and a few things I wanted done for piece of mind, but they are very niggly cars. I don't think the interior build quality is all that, lots of creaking and rattles around the centre console - seems the norm anyway.

I guess the main reason I bought mine was the stability on the road for my lame driving ability and the engine as a similar performing Focus/Astra et al would cost a lot more coin than 2250 quid.

I think since Aug 09 I've spent (once the clutch is done) around 800 on maintenance.

I just hope it keeps working now :D My little Corsa was a lot more reliable and in my eyes trustworthy, although the Golf is nicer to drive obviously.

Never really experienced any MK5's or MK6's mind, would like to, but almost all of the VAG range of cars seem to have a plethora of niggly problems under their belts.

Haha, it's not toooo bad but like I say, I am quite sad and made a hefty "to do" list. Mainly typical maintenance but I have a few electrical things to sort such as a passenger door module but on the whole, it's not too bad a car. I'm a tight ass though and don't like things breaking :)

No idea what I'd move to next in terms of brand... not convinced any brand is better than the next for the kinda stuff I'd be able to consider financially weighing up running costs and all that.

I guess it'd be the VW, Vauxhall, Ford brands I'd concentrate on for the next car, I like my "hot hatches" (even though despite a couple hundred BHP you can't really call mine one) so makes sense to move onto a newer, better built, more reliable car which has good VFM when the time comes.

But, if MK4 Golf ownership has it's way, I will never afford one due to repairs! Haha :)

Coming from a now MK4 owner... perfectly summed up. For me, the engine (after a remap) in relation to the price is the only real benefit over any other comparable car and despite mine being cheap it was still 2250 for a 10 year old 126k car at the time. Fox will tell you all about the image thing... fun times :)

Sounds like owning a BMW only without the creaky interior :p

'ooooh what shall I fix this month...' :p

Hehe, my engine may be about to blow up, my suspension is falling off and my automatic gearbox may eat it's self ...but my interior is solid as rock, no squeaks or rattles.

/Some exageration may have been used during this post.

the golf is a good rep/shopping car, has a variety of good engines and is a good size for the average family.

The GTI/R32 are the only interesting models, even then the GTI is a bit boring compared to say a Megane Sport or Focus ST.

I find them as reliable as any other other large automobile manufacturer and i prefere some of the plastics they use compared to say a ford.

There is nothing that really makes them stand out other than price and how well they are are being average.

Look at these dashes.

- My parents-in-law own a newish Skoda Octavia and sitting in the back, the plastics and all round feel of quality is inferior to the Golf. The door handles, window buttons, door cars, seat nets, rear air vents many other things...just didn't look and feel as good.

I would be really surprised considering most plastics in the back, window buttons, seat nets, rear air vents (and many other things) are actually from the same parts bin.

Does this look familiar?

To be honest, being Golf owner/driver you would notice immediately where the parts originated if you actually sat in Skoda for 5 seconds...

Does it use any more Skoda parts than an Audi and if so, source? Genuinely interested to know the technical details as to what extend VAG share parts between marques.
Same sat nav and radios (with different backlight), same climate controls with few lights and button bevels changed, steering wheel base (without airbags and plastic inserts), seats (to the point they are interchangable bar different leccy connectors), armrests, switchgear, knobs, buttons, keyfobs, sensors, buses and maxidot display patterns, same engine range, same platform, gearboxes, drivetrains, optional extras.

The difference of course is, this is £18.5k Golf:

This is £16.5k Octavia

Now... there is a school of thought out there on the net, that claims Audi is just an overpriced Golf. Then there are those that prefer to think Golf is just a well priced Audi. I, personally, reckon Golf just one heck of a ****** expensive Skoda. Now, that of course doesn't mean that Skodas suddenly rise to compete with Audis. No. They stay where they belong. Where they should. It's just that Golf price and perceived level that bothers me. For a car that small, that average and with that spec, built from the same parts as the car that starts at 12.5k, the new Golf sure feels like... what's that comparison I'm looking for... (looks up) - oh yeah - iPhone of car world.

It was my understanding that Skoda interiors are generally taken from the previous comparable out going model Audis, is that not so ?

Look at the picture above and you decide!

Are you maybe thinking of the new Seat Exeo, which is the old A4?

and when i close the door... it sounds just like a Golf

When I went to view a DC2 with my dad:

Dad: Hmmmm, guys, I've found something.
Them: Huh, what? (looking sheepish).
Dad *Grabs drivers door and pushes it shut*

Cling, clang clong, rattle ratlle, plop

Dad: 'Not like a golf'
Them: :confused::confused::confused:
Me: :D:D:D

Nothing wrong with golfs, drove plenty of mkv's at my driving job over 2 yrs ago and found them pleasant enough. But it was the hooning of the GTI that had me transfixed, that was an excellent car. Although I did prefer the bright yellow Leon Cupra, it just felt much faster being yellow :D

You think so?

v0n, fair comments. If the Golf is the iPhone of the car world, that just shows that exterior styling and interior quality still counts for something to the consumer in the 'ordinary car market'.

Who would have thunk it!

One of the things i loved about the Mk4 and B5.5 Passat interior is on a cold morning if you touch trim items all of them are cold, do the same thing on a Focus and they won't be, this is because the Focus uses cheap plastic for its trim and VW have used metal.

Are we supposed to be shocked and amazed that a 170bhp hatchback can do 0-60 in 8 seconds? Thats the thing with Golfs. It's like the iphone of the car world.

thats the best way ive seen the golfs summed up. Nicely done fox.:D

An iPhone of the car world would be one that looks really nice but is advertising about having "revolutionary" things like airbags, power steering and seatbelts which other cars have had for decades and none of the models come with air conditioning because they don't think it's necessary...
