The Secret Government Surveillance Document Microsoft Doesn't Want You To See

I have to say that's a laughable attempt to make a product document sound worse that than it is.

The US agencies have the ability through CALEA to monitor and control any text message in realtime from/to an individual - just as the UK government has. So next time you send an SMS, MMS or email..

...use email certificates, end-to-end 4098 bit encryption for IM and don't forget the VPN. :D This document's no big deal really, but then again what are the data protection laws in the US? Over here companies are obliged to keep us informed of how and where they're processing our data, as well as adhering to the Data Protection Act.

Perhaps this is a bigger deal to Americans than to us? I mean maybe they just didn't know what MS was storing and for how long before now? *shrug* Anyone seriously wishing to remain 'anonymous' or to keep data private online will be able to do so for the foreseeable future regardless of legislation and whatnot. This is more about Average Joe getting wound up about what big business is doing with their personal information.

For the most part though, a majority of us give up a portion of our privacy and personal information just to use what we now consider day-to-day activities. It's a trade off. "I'll be able to use 'X Social Network' if you get access to my name, address, phone numbers and banking info? OK."

That to me is of more interest than the fact MS has a procedure for releasing logs to law enforcement as per their legal requirements.
