NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 GPU Box/specs

I get the feeling 42A might be overstating the requirements by A LOT. It's probably to stop people with cheapo £20 "800W" PSUs that would blow up if connected to this card.

If the rating was accurate, I'd hate to see how much power the GTX 495 would draw!!!

Thats exactly what they are doing, as they would be in a world of bother if people started blowing up PSUs all over the place :D

I dug out the nvidia page that shows the PSUs that officialy support SLI in different configurations, again you can see they have built in a respectable safety margin... well except for the 300w psu thats listed for dual gtx295s, i think thats a typo that should say 1300w ;)

I could see a heavily overclocked Q6600, or even a Phenom 9x50 series in combination with one of these and a few hard drives meeting or even exceeding that kind of power draw (~500W) to be honest - remember that this is their requirement for what PSU you want in combination with this card, so they have to account for every common system specification (of which some particularly high power drawing parts belong)

Actually, just realised another thing - there's no way the card could draw more than 300W or it'd violate the PCI-express spec. That's the same problem the 5970 ran up against, which is why they had to underclock it to 5850 speeds to be able to sell it.

Its only using marginally more power than a 280gtx, and its rare those system surpass 400W.

My 4870x2 overclocked, with overclocked phenom, 8gb mem and more fans/hdd's than you really should have, would use 400-430W under heaviest load.

You could say Nvidia has been very smart with the ratings, maybe they've assumed anyone stupid enough to wait all this time for one of their crap and overpriced Fermi's is also the kind of person to throw down £1k on a intel 6 core chip, is running 12gb of the fastest ddr3 and every other stupid expensive thing you can buy, in which case you probably would want a pretty beefy psu.

Tons of GTX280 models state they require 42A....the reference GTX 285 requires 42A.....seriously, why are people making such a big deal about this? Did they really expect Nvidia's big monolithic launch model to be an eco-warrior's dream card?

Umm, picture 2. I am trying to get my head around the top portion of text leaning down towards the right, when the bottom portion of text is leaning up to the right...

The agnle of the green area within which they are positioned does not change, just the angle of the text within. Bad photoshop job?

These are from "Hex us", which is good enough for me to be classed as trusted ;)

Im not changing my card again till next year, plan for me is wait til the 295 comes down in price which im sure it will have to now wont it? and get a second one of them. Then next year ill maybe upgrade.

I think they've just stopped making them. The only place they'll go down in price is on the second hand market, and then they'll be quite few and far in between for the most part.

is it worth me waiting for one of these or are the ati dx11 ones ok what do you people think need to buy one this week to be honest so i think its the ati one ....as wanna use it for bad company 2.

the ati's like bad company 2, these 2 5770's run it maxed out at well over 60fps :) a single 5850/5870 would be more than enough for that title.

well surely they will have to drop there 295 price quite a lot.

The 295 is EOL (end of line), so there won't be too many of them for sale, and there's no reason for the price to drop.

You could find a second hand one, but adding a second 295 won't give so much of a boost as you might expect. SLI does not scale so well with 4 GPUs as it does with two (or three).

You'd be better off sticking with the card you have until you can find a two-GPU solution that gives you the performance you want.

Just in case you didn't notice...
