Just saw this on PH - just wondering what everyone on here thinks of this? Apparently it meets API SL/CF, ACEA A2,B2 standards.

i think its a3 you want it to meet for "performance" use.

eitherway, for your everyday car/use it should be fine.

i bought 25L of quantum platinum a while back, that worked out at £2.50 a litre or something like that and it meets loads of different spec

Got a link from PH? (do you mean a thread in the forum?) I had a brief look but could not find it....

Some people with their heads in the clouds though.

i have been buying oil from Asda for ages. There was a time when you could get 5L of GTX magnetec for £9 until GTX started only selling 4L containers and the price went to £11 but even so it is still considerably cheaper than halfords/motorworld etc

Erm.... £9 for 5L of Magnetec I dont think so!

It was cheap recently in Tesco at £15 for 4L!

Going to buy some of this to put in my 530i

Or not... :D

Wait, are you trying to say that ASDA 50p/litre oil ISN'T high quality?!

Better drain my sump :(

Seriously though, what would be wrong with this oil? Do "all oils come from the same refineries" like some people say? Has oil got a huge markup and just relies on a "brand loyalty" following?

exactly what i'm wondering. some companies do pay a premium but ultimately in the case of contaminated oil it's Asda that would get it in the neck from customers and they have no oil refineries themselves. Walmart might do but still........

Buy what oil you like but it's not all the same - petrol has some additives which may or may not help.

A modern semi (or fully) synthetic oil though is *all* about the additives.

I suppose it depends whether you run an 07 BMW or an V Reg Citroen as to whether you'd use oil as cheap as that!

If you're car is just used as a means of transport and you want to spend as little as possible on routine maintenance then I suppose cheap oil is fine!

ACEA A2/B2 doesn't even exist anymore. Avoid

Also I can't understand why people think putting crap stuff in every 3000 miles is somehow better than putting stuff three times as expensive in for 9,000 miles.

I've just paid £38 for 5L of silkolene 10W 50 Pro S. Sure its expensive but i know for a fact its good oil. Oil analysis results of it being ran in tuned SR20DET engines has proven that much.

More often than not with oil you get what you pay for, but that's not always the case.

Really?

"ACEA 2004 Oil documentation:

The categories A2 and B2 are not included in this edition of the ACEA European Oil Sequences because they are
unsuitable for some of the current engines and will be unsuitable for many future engines. Misuse may cause engine
damage. However, the use of A2/B2 oils for older engines (where owner's or workshop's literature recommends this use)
is still appropriate and can be done according to the categories A2-96 Issue 3 and B2-98-Issue 2
."

Best oil for my lump after a rebuild is mineral for example.

Should be clear what people should and shouldn't use.
