i7 920 vs AMD 965 black edition

Overspend in progress!

£61.08 on CPU cooling! :D

Solway I can't help you, your too far gone! ;), there are plenty of other folks that will help you splurge £833 quid on a PC but I don't have the stomach for this! :p

let just say im aiming under a grand! more i get below the better

What is your max max budget then? . . . give the guys something to work with? . . . and what parts have you already got towards the build!

what im saying, why such difference in price anyway?
AM3 has better lifespan?

difference in price is because of performance, even small increases in performance can result in huge price deltas.

only time will tell if AM3 has a better life span, as far as im aware their sex-core cpus will run from am3 boards. i dont know what intel are planning, although i believe they are trying to match amd in retainng socket types for as long as possible.

well my current system

Althon Xp 3200 barton!
2GB ram
6800GT etc etc

PSU is new, although not sure on watts (surely i should, since that old hardware draws more juice?) think its a hiper 580w with crossfire cert.

a year ago i had an almost identical system. i dont think that a 580W psu will last long with either of the setups u posted originally. both the cpus have a TDP of around 130W, leaves you with 350W. then the graphics u chose need around 200W so ur down to 150W for ur ram + hdds + usb devices + fans + mb.

this website is good for deciding what psu power u should need: http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp

Cool, I got Spider-Senses too! :D
A couple of things have changed which you might not be aware off, the main point is everything is *ridiculously* powerful now and gone all the days where you need to slap out £1000 to get a juicy system!

exactly right. right now core i5 is the way forward (good value for money and performance) and probably more comparable to the am3 sockets aound at the moment.

don't say that... i keep finding fiver under the sofa!

lets say aim around 800max, ish

currently have the following

Case - armour black
HDD - 2 x 1TB sata2 (might get another for backup/raid)
Soundcard - soundblaster X-FI gamer PCI
DVD-RW - IDE samsung i think (without looking) - doesn't matter if no IDE on board, will get a sata one then
PSU - hiper 580w

so, mobo, ram, cpu, gpu required, and extra 3rd party cooling maybe (or later date)

although i suspect u will need a new psu too - i would definitely try it first and see if there are problems before wasting money.

and 50p less delivery charges! bargain! :D

i think those are 2 good systems and both represent good value for money (probably Big.Wayne's is better value), just depends how fast a system u want. as i said before there is a positive exponential curve of price vs performance. that is, as performance increases, price increases more.

hmm thanks

i5, well i think the socket is at a dead-end, so kinda want upgradable, so AM3 or i7 i would guess
unsure on intel's socket plans, i know AMD is keep AM3 for the time being.

the gpu, is in the right region. although new cards are around the corner.

ram i was thinking of 6gb, not sure why. lol (got win7 64bit to put on)

psu, well that depends on hardware

well ive come up with the following:
albeit i haven't researched or look at the details

think of unlocking the X2 550 to a x4 965 with bios

might wait for GPU card releases

I agree with both specs except for the RAM in both cases. In the AMD spec, I wouldn't suggest buying RAM that costs twice the price of the CPU - it just doesn't make sense. I would suggest this kit instead.

For the i7 built, you can get a nice 6GB triple channel kit for less than the price of those dominators.

Also, you can't bank on the X2 unlocking to an X4. If you really want a quad core, then you should buy one from the start. If your system is just for playing games, I would suggest seriously considering the triple core that Big.Wayne suggested, you really don't need anything more powerful.

As for Intels socket plans with regards to the i7 (s1336) Intel have announced that 32nm, 6 core, nahalem based "Gulftown" chips will work in this socket and with existing X58 boards. These are to be released later this year and represent a large increase in multithreaded power (however, as previously established this kind of power will be of little use to gamers at the minute).

Heh Solway your very keen I'll give you that! :p . . . however you are what is known as a Marketing-Junkie! . . . you have spent a week or so just sucking up as much info as possible from the web and have an uncanny knack of selecting hardware by arranging it by price and choosing one near the top of the list! :D

You don't need to spend so much money to get a machine that's gonna blow you away, I also question the uBer GPU when you have stated your not a gamer?

Here's a re-do of your last AMD® Phenom™ II spec . . . but I shaved £100 and £200 pound off . . . don't think you will notice the difference in use but your wallet will be healthy still!

solwayfinal.jpg

Any of these processors are available . . .

AMD® Athlon™ II X3 425
AMD® Athlon™ II X3 435

AMD® Phenom™ II X2 550
AMD® Phenom™ II X2 555

AMD® Athlon™ II X4 620

does it come with that women...? were did you find one that has light coming from her eyes, i will save me on buying a new torch! :D

i didn't research into the hardware, because im just snopping/budgeting, not pressing the buy button yet. :)

well i am a gamer, when did i say i wasn't? im battlefield, crysis, l4d2, coh, gta4 etc etc etc (mostly fps)

thanks for the builds. i think medium for GPU is fine 5850 although i will wait and see for the new cards coming.

Ram, well that depends on intel/amd, i would get a triple kit for intel. does CAS still count nowadays? could be a area of saving, whats the differences? OCing only?

no frills motherboard would be fine, would aim for sata 6gb and usb3 if possible, also depend on slots, not really interested in sli/crossfire,

CPU, well thats a deciding factor. was thinking the Pii 550 x2 hack to Pii 965 x4 would be good. but i7 930 has still got me in benchmarks. (although not gaming ones to be honest)

its a pain in the arse!
AMD or not, Intel or not.

now the new nvidia cards are looking good. although no dx11 on the 2xx series

Theorytically 4-5yrs (that's what all i7 buyers say).
Practically 6-18months (that's what all i7 buyers do).

lol,

well depends on the how well the sockets last

i was screwed when i brought this system, althonxp and AGP changed bascialy a few months after. so i did general upgrading around the main board etc.. thats would be future proof.

i am thinking of AM3 route to be honest.

If you are thinking of going the phenom unlocking route go for a 555 over a 550. Much better chance of unlocking.

Although as above:- do not buy if you need a quad/triple core. The unlock is not guaranteed, it is a bonus only.

no one knows how long the sockets will last. the reason i asked is that if you are planning on upgrading anything after 2 years then both amd and intel are likely to have new sockets anyway so there is no point on aiming for longevity now anyway.
