Does anyone employ a cleaner?

Do they have a set of your house keys or do you insist on being in whilst they clean etc?

The reason I ask is that we are not using an Agency, we're employing a student from one of the local Uni's directly. Obviously we'll check the references and so on but I'm unclear if giving a stranger our house keys has an effect on our home insurance. I'm going to call our insurer later today but in the meantime, does anyone have any tips? Things to look out for?

Cheers :)

We have a cleaner who comes over every Friday. She has a key to the back door, but then she has been cleaning my parents house for a while now.

I believe if you go through an agency they should have their own insurance too.

We've used an agency and have had the same cleaner for the past 5-6 years and a few substitutes whilst she's on holiday- no problems at all as of yet.

Around £10-11 p/h with agency fees I believe

i'd love to get a cleaner...just would be worried they'd poke through my stuff. plus i'd have to hide potentially embarressing things..and then wonder if they'd find em anyway

I wouldn't bother with a cleaner, not only do you get added security risk and less privacy, I like things to be cleaned in a certain way.

Seems a waste of money to pay someone to hoover and wipe the sides down.

How many different ways are there to hoover and wipe the sides down?

I have a cleaner - she hoovers the carpets, mops the floor, does all the washing up and/or empties the dishwasher, irons all my clothes and shirts, puts everything away, and changes the sheets/duvet on my bed. For the total lack of effort this involves me, I'd happily pay double. This would take me hours at the weekends, and I'd rather not bother.

Fortunately, I don't have the situation in the OP - I live in a gated flat development, and the porter has a set of keys. She simply takes them off him for the couple of hours a week and gives them back.

They don't clean up - or maybe I need to trade mine in
Get her to produce a sprog, mature for 13 years or so - Result!

Well, my 13 year old is a great cleaner! and I don't have to ask her to clean up either!

That said, she made one hell of a mess over the maturing years..... :D

My parents do... she is coming tomorrow infact.. she normally comes into the house whilst sleeping :(

She does have a set of keys too..
