hi, just powered up my new build (see sig) but it wont turn the monitor on from standby (crt 19") the orange standby light flicks green for on when i powerup but goes straight back to flashing orange (standby)
ive tried all the outputs from the gfx cards with no joy.
my mouse and keyboard light up ok and the fans are working it just wont switch the screen on. i havnt got a DVD/rw connected atm but that shouldnt stop me getting the sceen up should it?
any ideas?
cheers

reseat graphics cards? reconnect power cables to graphic cards? Make sure the monitor works on another rig..

Just noticed your sig, I assume this is the spec that's in your sig? In that case, try with only one 5870 in there..
Also try removing various RAM modules to check whether one or two of them are malfunctioning..

yeah monitor works im using it atm on my old rig, been reading up and seems its possable the memorys failing the POST

EDIT: ok gonna try again with 1 GPU

That's why i suggested trying different combinations of modules. That'll show if the problem's there :) (assuming at least one of them works)

Yeah try just one Dimm in the first slot. That would be where I would start looking for the cause anyways.

Is the monitor not detecting a signal? It sounds very similar to a problem I had when putting together my PC. It was the first time I had built one myself and I managed to completely miss one of the power cables going into the motherboard. Your absolutely sure you have everything plugged in propery?

pretty sure i have everything where it should be, the monitor is getting a signal, ive tried adding 1 dimm at a time, everything seems to work ie: fans mouse keyboard gpu-fan. the monitor is set to D-SUB

Have you got a case speaker plugged in? If you do you can tell if it is posting, single bleep or if more than one then you can use the bleep codes to help diagnose whats wrong.

done, one long beep followed by 3 short ones, 'no VGA detected'
ive swapped both cards around but still have the same problem, btw im using a converter that came with the gfx cards, its D-SUB to DVI but ive tested it and it works on on my old rig, the fans on both cards power up ok

im still looking for some help here if anyone has any ideas, "no VGA detected" error
also i noted that the gfx fans seem to be on full throttle shifting loads of air any making considerable noise even with the 6 pin cable unplugged, ive tried both gfx cards one at a time in different PCIe slots with always the same error

I was getting the same sort of problems with my Asus board, although I was getting no on screen errors. RMA'd and confirmed it was a faulty board.

did your board POST ok and you could get to the bios?? i get nothing, just the bleeps telling the error no VGA detected :/

Its either vga card / ram or perhaps dodgy mobo :(
One thing that caught me out.... Do you have both the 24 pin and 8 pin power connected to the mobo?

You have lots of components to test.

You have 2 vga cards, and 2 pci slots for them, try only one card at a time in each slot.
Thats 4 tests alone

Next look at ram, you have 3 sticks, try one stick at a time in each slot.
Thats another 9 tests.

If you want to mix the tests thats about 36 tests.

If that still doesn't work i would start looking at the mobo.....

Good luck.

From ASUS website:
Please refer to POST beep code below for reference on how to resolve this issue:
(1) One long two Short: No RAM modules are detected. If you are hearing this Beep code when all RAM modules are removed, while system no longer beep or POST after RAM modules are installed, then it simply means the RAM modules installed are not compatible with each other, or not compatible with the motherboard. Please replace your RAM modules if possible.
(2) One long three Short: No VGA card detected. If you are hearing this beep code while having no VGA cards installed, and system still refuse to output Any display After installing your VGA card, it simply means your VGA card is not functioning as it Should. Please replace your VGA card if possible (Note: If you Are experiencing this problem on motherboards with built-in VGA function, then it may be a result of incompatible RAM modules. Please replace your RAM modules if possible.)

ive tried all combinations of gfx in PCI slots, ive tried the RAM 1 at a time in different slots, i have the 24 & 8 pin connectors onto mobo & psu.
my RAM is quite ordinary so i dont think its in-compatable http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-188-CS&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1389
with my MOBO http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-379-AS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1692
it says in the manual that if incompatable memory is installed the LED next to it stays on.. it doesnt so it must be ok

Try booting on your desk to make sure that the case isn't shorting anything?

I'm actually having the same issue with a friends PC and thats what I'm about to do when I get home from work :)

I can't see it being the case, it would be one of the last things I'd try.

I know its been mentioned before but you definately have the additional PCI-E power connectors plugged into the graphics card? The noise they make when they start up is normal, happens with my nVidia card as well, fan goes on 100% during POST then slows down.

Have you cleared the CMOS settings? If not put the card in the first slot, clear the CMOS and try that.

the gfx card has 2 x 6 pin sockets at the rear, afaik i only need attatch 1 x 6 pin cable to 1 of these?? ive tried the 6 pin power cable in both with same result.
i havnt tried clearing the CMOS yet
