I'm playing it on my PSP at the moment and i'm on the second disk.

Most battle are decided by me spamming the GF's and stocking loads of cures and other magics.

Should i be using normal attacks and magic to build up my exp after battles?

With bigger battles, i do use things like sleep, zombie, blind etc

What am i supposed to do with the weaker enemies?

I remember the first time I played Final Fantasy 8 (The first FF I played) - I didn't take the time to read any of the tutorials :p I went through the whole game without using the draw ability or any magic! :p So I fought with purely the attack button and GFs :p

Can't help you with your question though... not sure if you get more experience with using other techniques?

It just feels wrong though.

When i come up against a strong opponent, a single attack takes off around 500HP, and all my characters have around 1200HP so far, i just feel that i should have more HP by now.

Squall's Lv 28 and only 1281HP.

I'm 24 hours in, anyone know roughly how long to go?

look at what your GFs are learning as you can make them learn things to allow you to attach all this magic you are drawing to the characters health giving it a big boost, especially if you get the right magic stocked.

also get all of them to learn the boost ability then when they are attacking you press sellect and bash square and it gives the GF attack a boost.

hopefully this makes sense its been a good few years since i played FFVIII, even though i have the original disks.

eidt: also depending on how your playing the game, side missions etc... you could do it in another 20 hours bt it could take you over 100.

Thanks, just looked at what my GF's are learning and noticed something about HP.

If they've learnt HP+J i can junction Blizzara and it bumps up my HP to around 2500 :)

I really should pay more attention during the little tutorials and figure out how to play this game well

You can also juntion different magics to the character. Junctioning things like curaga/life etc to the characters HP will increase their health a lot.

There's such a variety of ways to boost your characters in 8, just make sure you draw plenty of magics to junction to your different stats.

first time I played through it took me about 60 hrs, then the second time I spent nealy double that

I forgot about that! I used to give my hands such bad cramp lol! :D

You're not playing it wrong in battles (as you can play it how you want) but to get more HP you need to use the junction system. Go to the menu and try and find the junction system, there you link spells to certain stats and it increases depending on the spell. For example cure spells tend to increase your HP a lot. To get this even higher I think you need to get more of the spells too using the draw system (drawing magic from enemies).
All your stats can be boosted with the junction system but since it's reliant on magic and you can only use one magic per stat (can't have curaga on HP and strength, only one can be picked) it's a good idea to try and be stocked up on magic.

when you get the ability from a GF to turn items into life magic, buy a load of tents from a shop and turn them into curagas. its what i did in the early parts of the game

Normal attacks are the most powerful and generally best thing in FFVII and FFVIII in my experience.

When you get quad cut materia on Cloud later on, omg. 9999,9999,9999,9999 and it sounds epic too, and has a cool animation. :D

first thing i always did once id become a seed was the tests to increase your seed level as having gil makes the game a lot more fun imo.

Sorry to bring this up again, but i just had a quick check, and i'm missing loads of GF's.

I've only got 4, and a quick search suggests that i could have a lot more if i'd only drawn them from enemies.

It's too late to go back and get them, i just wish when drawing items, it would say GF or something, so i know to draw it.

I'm in Galbadia garden now, and i'm trying to beat Cerebus so i can claim that GF, but i can't beat him. No magic will work, his single attacks take off 800-1000 and i just can't beat him.

Any tips on how to beat him?

Title reading fail :p

As for the OP, it's a good idea to get your head around junctioning, it's quite flexible. Also, have you been upgrading your weapons?

I think i have been.

Been to the weapon shop and upgraded a few things, but as i've said, i'm just using gf's and magic, no regular attacks, so weapon upgrades won't really have an effect, or should they?

Well for physical attacks it will :)

I remember Cerberus being a right bugger to kill. make sure you dispel his triple, and I think Diablos does decent damage to him.

Thing is, i feel i'm quite far into the game and i've only got 4 GF's

Shiva, Big Brothers, Irfrit and Quecolcol???

I should have more by now, but they don't make it clear that you can draw them from other people.

Thanks for the tip on triple, i have no idea what it does for him. I thought i'd cast it on myself and it would let me have 3 goes or something, no idea what it does?

Triple allows you to cast magic 3 times instead of once, so very very handy )if using magic!).

Check your inventory, there should be a magic lamp. Use it (and be ready for a fight).

You have missed 4 GF's. Yeah it's a pain, but you still have some of the best ones to come :)

the best ones to come are also the toughest to get. i wont give anything away. :p they are optional though.

edit: i remember spending well over a 100 hours trying to get absolutely everything in this game. :D
