Alloys corroded? (pics)

Hi all,

I was enquiring about having my alloys refurbed as one was suffering from curbage, and others had slight 'bubbling' which I thought was caused by acidic cleaners.

I have been advised that the 'bubbling' actually looks like underlying corrosion of the alloy and the best way to recifify this is a 'full strip of the finish'.

What are peoples thoughts on this? Im just looking for a second opinion before i fork out money having them rectified.

curbage :(

Corrosion I've always had my wheels refurbed or changed under warranty. I'd weigh up the age and worth of the car before I spent large amounts of money refurbing alloys.

Kerb marks I've had removed before for £40 and the areas reworked but after 12 months the laquer in that area started to come off as the whole wheel hadn't been stripped back.

Yeah it looks like the previous owner went down the cheap route hence why the paint looks to be sheering off in neat layers. The car is 04 Clio 182 and is worth about 5k. Obviously no chance of a refurb or replacement under warranty.

I notice you're based in cambs. I have been referred to WheelGenie in huntingdon to do the work (any experience of them?) and am just waitng back on a quote. Im hoping a full strip on all four alloys comes in at ~£200 or is that wishful thinking?

I used the service center at Marshalls because at the time I used to be an employee there and paid £35-40 a wheel for a repair.

I'd be amazed if 4 alloys is as cheap as £200 but I'd never heard of them. I'd be interested as to what they quote you for fture reference :)

The TT had all 4 done before we collected it, full strip and 4 coat powdercoat, wheels were rebalanced after tyres were put back on too, the receipt shows the price was £212, may be a bit more in reality as this was paid by the dealer who probably gets a better rate

They look excactly like my dads Ford Mondeo alloys, I always thought that they were 100% aluminium and could not rust but looks like I was wrong.

I guess it depends on what a full strip costs, might not be a lot less than getting four new ones ?!?!

You got any before and after pics mate?

My ST220 wheels are in terrible condition. :(

I'm sure i can sort some out. I didn't get any close up of the before pics....only a couple of phone cam pics but you can still see the difference.

2 or 3 of the wheels had lost the laquer and were basically black from corrosion....they looked better dirty!

The only issue was that they couldn't do the centre caps but they match pretty well anyway. I'll replace them with some better condition ones when I've got some spare cash.

Sound like mine, I don't bother washing them any more as they look terrible.

Where was the place you used?

Expect to pay anything from 30-60 per wheel condition of each wheel does determine the price..
Usually cheaper for all 4 to be done...
Had my audi A4s done for £200 all 4...

I'm needing a set of alloys refurbed in the near future. A mate of mine can spray them (inside and out) for £70 - seen his work in the flesh and was very impressed. Powder coating looks like it'll cost £160ish.

Not sure whether to pay the extra and have the durability of powder coating.
