Dirt 2 issues

Hi,

I bought and installed Dirt 2 a few days ago, now im having trouble with it running smoothly.

First problem is every time i start the game it performs a first time setup and takes an age to install windows live, if/when i get in, the menu's run smooth and it loads up fine but in races it pauses every 2-3 seconds, just a little pause but its unplayable. This happens most of the time but occasionally it runs fine.

Now, im running a Q9550 OC'd the 3.7Ghz, 4 gig RAM and a GTX 260, my graphics settings are mainly on high and it does run the game on these settings when it wants to, ive tried turning everything down but i still get the stuttering.

Ideas?

Thanks

It's a problem with the game engine, happens in GRID sometimes too. The only way i've ever sorted it when it's struck me is to just reinstall until it goes away as it seems entirely random whether it does it or not :(

Sounds like I'm having the same issue. The game stutters the whole way through the race. I've been playing about all afternoon trying to get it sorted. I have tried vsync on and off, lowering the graphics settings, changing the AA settings. I though it may have been fraps running as I had a similar issue with this on another game but it's now off and there's no improvement. Very annoying.

I thought about the firewall but it makes no difference, im re-installing it now and see if it cures it, at 10GB its not a small game to download but im fed up with messing around.

When it worked it was a really good game, just want to start playing it properly now!

Ive re-installed the game and im still having the same problems, if this was a disk in smash **** out of it and put it in the microwave!!!

Do Steam do refunds for crap running games?

have you tried with the settings at high, 8xaa and v-sync on, anything else for me seems to lower peformance, also what resolution are you at and what screen type is it set to 16.10 or 16.9 ?

I had this issue when I was downloading files at high speeds (even in single player), and my guess was that my HDD couldn't handle it. What's your HDD doing besides running the game? Or is it a decent HDD?

Im actually having problems with the game starting up.
Click the icon > Steam connecting > screens goes black with white dirt 2 logo then stops responding, its always worked fine before. Anyone know what this is?

I have some issues with Dirt 2 as well, I have a 5870 so it should not be my computer hardware since it is brand new. I have stuttering happen in game randomly, also the sound seem to bug as well looping over itself. Any idea what could cause this?

Well GFWL is making me download an update (which for some reason maxes out my cpu and takes over two hours) so hopefully it'll fix any bugs?

EDIT: it now opens in windowed mode only. Update fail!

Alt + enter will make it full screen again. Have you guys all tried the latest cat 10.3s? Apparently some really big performance jumps in those, granted mainly with crossfire...

Mine stutters sometimes, I'm running a 8800gt.

Turning the AA down to 2x helped a little, less stuttery.

I never had this on GRID, it seemed much smoother than D2.

Ive tried with 8xaa and higher, 16.9 and 16.10, v-sync on and off, ill try maxing them out and see. Run the res at 1608x1050

It seems slow to start from the desktop and always performs a first time setup.

Ive got my OS on a Samsung SSD and Steam on 2 Samsung SSD's in RAID, think that should cover it nicely.

just tried it with the following settings and its better, just get screen tearing (think thats what its called)

res 1680x1050 @ 16.10
8xmsaa
V-sync off
gamma 0.9
everything else on highest setting

Tried with v-sync on but it started jumping again

Ok, its back to how it usually is even on the above settings.

Im going Windows 7 soon so ill see if it runs better with that.

Also, are you ment to hear other drivers talking? I get a speech bubble but no sound from it....

You can modify the first-time install script for Steam games by removing the G.F.W.L. lines and anything else that installs in the file installscript.vdf in the Dirt 2 directory.
