Tell Me About Edinburgh

Leith isn't that bad at all these days, I'd quite happily stay in the majority of leith. :)

I don't find pilton etc that bad personally it isn't quite trainspotting ala 1990's anymore, but I'm a scary dude anyway ;)

It's probably just a bit of old prejudice against Leith as I say, I used to have great fun winding up an ex-work colleague about Leith though.

Pilton I'd avoid as much for the reputation as anything else but then again despite the reputation I saw very little trouble in Oxgangs.

Where are you looking? Rightmove doesn't know any of those locations.

CityLets, got absolutely no idea what it is like as a service but it was just one of the first results on a search. The area I'm suggesting comes under Edinburgh South, pretty close to Hillend (aka Midlothian Ski Centre although you'll not find many people from Edinburgh call it that) if that interests you at all. Bonaly is another location round there you could consider.

Where were you born or from? Prejudices on this are often very quickly explained with that.. ;)

lol you were lucky at oxgangs then. ;) its westerhales not oxgangs that is the trouble in the west. At the end of the day you can run into trouble anywhere, and some bits are rough obviously but its not hard to spot them. With regeneration in pilton, niddry etc rough spots can be localised to a street or two sometimes, which in turn is surrounded by newer property, newer cars on drives gardens kept etc. There are still problems genereally in some of these areas obviously, but parts of town are getting very peculiar with the 'rich/poor' devide.

Leith is a good place to be property wise, you've got scabby to normal houses and flats right up to the very very expensive penthouses down near the docks and other waterfront developments, whole parts of the river forth have been reclaimed to build new a 'skyscraper' look. (imagine looking at edinburgh skyline from the kingdom over the water). its changed a fair bit.

The walk has been destroyed by tram works, and the shop fronts are drap as ever.. but that has always been the same even before them and the play off being close proximaty to the centre.

As the guy pointed out, ESPN. Also s1rental. You're request is fairly easy to fulfil.

Would figure out if the job had parking, or was near enough to a station that'd you'd be OK and go from there.

Born near Holyrood but lived in South Edinburgh since I was about 6 months old up until I was about 18. I've not got all that much against Leith if I'm honest but it was always good to wind up the ex-colleague with, plus it's too close to Hibs territory. ;)

Holyrood palace, park, school? Which?

:D

My dad lived in whitehorse close, nearest close to the palace down in the cannongate. Just across from the royal mile primary school, where the parliament is now.

I also grew up in the south of edinburgh, top side of the inch to be precise.

There used to be a hospital near Holyrood Park which is where I was born, not quite sure what it was called as it closed down fairly shortly after my birth although I'm assured the two things are not linked.

I was a bit further South than you growing up nearer to Hillend but I vaguely know the Inch, more from passing through there than anything else. The thread's interesting to me now but probably not much help to platypus when we're just reminiscing about our childhoods. :p

Thats were I lived last year at Western Harbour (though not penthouses, just an average 2bed :p), the normal flats arn't that bad price wise, around 600pcm for a 2bed, about the same as the old, rough but nice 'student' flats right in the center. People I knew across the road were going to be moving and renting out their penthouse (3 or 4 bed) for 900pcm and they had great views into the city and was obviously much nicer than my 2bed.

If you want a new build (though OP isnt) they're very nice, though some of the styling of some of the blocks is a bit...questionable to say the least and the flat/block I was in had very clear low cost fittings and decorations; walls you could mark just by looking at them funny, bath panels that popped out if you nudged them to hard and bad moisture/ventilation, though im sure part of that was just that flat in particular.

Plus massive 24hour Asda 2mins down the road which was great for 4am back from the town/random midnight 'I want food!' runs. I also liked being right down by the water which is one thing I miss :) :(

EDIT: As this is OCUK worth pointing out that the internet connection down there is absolutely awful, 320kbs and thats your connection maxed out and no option at all for cable.

Do you know where in Edinburgh you would be working? It can take a while to get across the city in rush hour so that may influence your decision. My boyfriend worked in the east end of the city centre and it took him an hour to drive around 10 miles from our flat in the west of Edinburgh.

There are a lot of nice places in the west side - Colinton, Juniper Green and Fairmilehead are all areas I'd consider moving to permanently. You will find that prices go up the closer you get to Edinburgh university, really anywhere near the meadows and Newington/Causewayside will be more expensive.
