BBC confirms cuts to radio, online services

I do think the BBC should have adverts on stuff it sends abroad, there is no point on the UK sitting on this material, we might as well sell it after we have watched it, why not? Suerly it is money that doesn't have to be paid for by us. I don't want to subside the rest of the world really especially when to watch half the American stuff we have to pay Sky £50.
I'm not sure if you're saying this should happen, or agreeing that it's right it does. If the former, read the latter.

Asian Network? Do they actually play Chinese and Japanese music then?

I would imagine the south-asian pop and rock includes chinese and east-asian music, but I'm not a listener so couldn't say for sure, or equally likely it could be taking the british common usage of asian when referring to a culture and just mean west-asian.

Interesting that when we refer to asians we generally mean the side closest to us and the same goes for the US.

I reckon it's just because 6 is at the end of the numbers. If they scrap one in the middle they either have a gap or have to renumber everything.

Well, maybe :)

Gutted about 6music. It had some fantastic content - I would have expected other stations to go before that.

I just hate Chris Moyles and his bunch of ass munchers on that god awful show so much, maybe they will get rid of him, please I would like to be able to listen to the radio in the morning.

They do. The BBC sells loads of the programs abroad or else puts them on a channel full of adverts. For example most of the nature documentaries are sold at a profit (and as we all know BBC nature documentaries are the best in the world, patly because they are the only ones that can afford to spend 5 years making them, ala blue planet and planet earth), top gear is viewed by something stupid like 300m people and mutliple other programs such as Dr Who and *gupl* even Eastenders. I'd guess a lot of these programs may actually make a profit in the long term due to this.

BBC also has fingers in a lot of film pies, I think March of the Penguins was partly funded by them as well as at least one massive film out at the cinemas at the moment (possibly Holmes). They also fund the likes of Band of Brothers and possibly the new Pacific one coming out in the near future.

I agree about Chris Moyles. Get rid of most of the radio presenters and just play music instead. At the moment there is not much reason to choose Radio 1 over the other commecial radio stations because they do just as much talking as the commercial stations do adverts.:( That would save masses of money and make radio better.

+1.

Its so annoying! Every time I want to watch a news clip, I have to watch a bloody advert about booking my next holiday in Malaysia.

Same with Youtube, I keep getting Google Chrome adverts before each video.

You are of course aware that the BBC website outside of the UK has it's costs covered by the adverts, as why should the LF payers in the UK be paying for non LF payers in other countries ;)

They could also save quiet a bit of money sacking a Presenter. Kate Silverton - how the hell anyone can rate her as a serious Journalist is beyond me.

I agree they should get rid of her, other than the fact she is pleasing on the eye she should not be reading the news. But thats what the beeb does, out with the old and in with the new. As soon as a women becoomes old in the tooth they get rid of them.

I've seen 3 films just this year so far that opened with a BBC credit, damned if I can remember which ones though :(

A google would reveal:
The Men who stare at goats
Edge of Darkness
a trailer for "An Education"

Shame as 6 Music is rather good too. :( I just think that not enough people know what sort of thing it plays, due to BBC not really advertising its existence enough.

They don't :) It's basically mostly pop music from India and Pakistan in a nutshell, there's probably other regions represented but they're generally pushed to the off-peak hours.

It's not a sad thing for it to go at all, It's been broadcast on the MW frequencies which gives poor sound quality, and over the past few years, the general quality of presenters and music has been declining steadily. This has given the local 'Asian' radio stations a much needed boost as a lot of them broadcast on the FM spectrum.

Being Asian, and listening to the Asian Network, I'm not really sad to see it go, there's a few presenters who are entertaining and I would actually go out of my way to listen to, but I'm sure they'll find a better home if and when the Asian Network closes.

The shake-up, which had been flagged by the British media last week, will free an extra 600 million pounds ($993 million) to be spent on lining the pockets of the BBC fat cats, Mr Thompson told staff at the corporation's headquarters in London.

To be honest. Other than Top Gear and the possibility of maybe a few other shows the BBC is pap.

I'd like to see what this 600 MILLION will go towards, best be some **** hot programs. I'm talking super high standards here, like the Wireless Blowjob machine level of high standard.

Otherwise I call BS

See that was it - it got very little/no marketing so despite it being and incredible satation enjoyed by everyone who listened to it - not enough knew of its existance/what it played so figures were low.

this. its amazing and the only radio i ever listen too.

Agreed - I knew things must have been bad when Adam & Joe suggested they were going to be taking a break from the station :(

thing that annoys me most about all this is the ''we want quality over quantity'' statement. WTF ? R1 is just full of shows that are all near enough the same and that are all hosted by hugely overpaid presenters. R6 is full of quality shows that cover many genres. often by cheap or volunteering guest presenters

In relative terms (keeping in mind that the Beeb's budget is the largest of any media organisation in the entire world) I believe that the ABC compares well against the Beeb. However, there can be no doubt that the Beeb is a far superior product.

Looking at the figures, it's not hard to see why the Beeb is still top dog:

BBC annual budget: ~£4.3 billion.
ABC annual budget: ~£68 million.

Um, I've found ABC's budget at AUD$1.13 Billion a year?
