Afternoon, needing a little advice basically im a second year student at university, and my part time job has rota'd me in for 32 hours this week, now usualy i do <16 where do i legally stand to decline these hours if i cant get people to swap? we dont have set shift patterns at work so people get dumped all over the place, secondly my availability does show my available times up to a maximum of 16 hours.

Thanks in advance.

Its somewhere at home about 3 hours away so not going to go hunt for that, will try and find a handbook or something at work if nobody has a clue.

If your only contracted to 16hrs you don't have to work anymore.

You should explain your situation to your manager though that you need more time to do uni work etc... If he isn't a ****** then he will understand

Sorry, if he or she...

Hands up

Just go and speak with whoever is in charge or whoever is doing the rota to see if something can be sorted out. Explain the situation to them and see what happens.

Of course, by doing this you can't pull a sicky :p

If worst comes to worst and there forcing you to work those hours, then just dont turn up. Uni + studys are fair more important than short term money.

This. But also your only obligated to undertake your contracted hours, so to know whether or not you need to do these hours or not, you need to know how many hours a week your contracted for.

Seems unlikey, given the sudden hike in hours, that you will be contractually obligated to do the extra hours though

If they want you to work over your contracted hours they have to talk to you and you have to agree to them , your well within you rights to say no

Don't waste time and go and speak to your manager asap that you have uni and can only do 16 hours p/w as you probably agreed on doing specific amount of hours before taking on this job. Alternatively tell them that you can help them cover some hours if this is possible for you.

Anyway good luck :)

Have you spoken to your boss about this or have you just come straight 'To the Internet'?

Surely the obvious first step is to talk to the manager who created the rota and explain the situation? If he is a reasonable person and any good at his job he will understand and you can sort it out to your mutual satisfaction.

I seriously wonder sometimes what people did before the internet.
