confirmed for "fall this year" :D!

kotaku:
Atari and Eden Games return to the islands for Test Drive Unlimited 2, the sequel to the hit 2006 online sandbox driving game. How does 2 compare to the original? The difference is night and day - and vehicle damage.

Test Drive Unlimited was a pretty big Xbox 360 title when it came out in 2006. It was a prime example of the potential of Xbox Live online multiplayer, allowing the player to see other drivers playing the game online, dropping in and out of races on the fly. It was a little buggy, sure, but we liked it.

Now Eden and Atari team up once again for Test Drive Unlimited 2, giving players a whole new island and features that should make this second installment far superior to the first. Weather effects, a day and night cycle, and vehicle damage up the ante in the sequel, with a revamped single player narrative mode that you can play both on and offline.

"After the highly successful Test Drive Unlimited which redefined the genre with massively open online racing, Test Drive Unlimited 2 will be an innovative evolution in racing games, expanding its unparalleled multiplayer experience and immersing players in a world full of new online content and lifestyle customization." said Jeff Lapin, CEO of Atari, SA. "The game fits squarely into our strategy of moving online and generating new revenue streams while maintaining our current retail business."

Test Drive Unlimited 2 is due out this fall on the Xbox 360, PC, and the PlayStation 3

Cool. Wonder if there keeping the old car list etc and adding a lot more to it.

Shame it probably wont be modable like the first, it would be so cool to have old cars to drive in that game.

Doubt it's going to be any better graphically than TDU, since it's also made for the backwards 2 consoles...

Hope there will be more and new cars in though. They could improve the tuning bit of the game too, I mean the tuning in the original TDU was just improving a little bit of everything from the stock spec, but in reality, mercs would have a mahoosive speed increase when the limiter is removed, or cars like the Skyline GTR would easily do 500+ bhp... For example, a CLS55 AMG is limited to 250kph like all merc benz's and amg's, but with level 2 tuning it would only do 264 kph. While in reality it would easily reach far higher speeds with the limiter removed, let alone a power increase...

Sounds good. About time they made a sequel. Ibiza is a bit 'meh' though. Hawaii was a great location.

Didn't think they'd change it :(.

MEH ibiza indeed, no more wide highways to race over at top speed and a tiny world in comparison to tdu :(.

I think they should map out an entire country. It would be rather cool racing down the A52 from Derby to Nottingham in some silly time.:p Burning some dognuts out side your local Spar. Buying your own house to store your car in:D.

They should have thought bigger.

You should start in your geo location (Derby for me) and have to make your way to other towns and citys whilst completing job/quests. Have car showrooms in the actual loactions they are in real life, so if I wanted a new Masserati or Ferrari, I would have to drive to Nottingham as thats my nearest dealer. Aston Martin on the other hand, stones throw away from my house :D.

What they could have done!!!!!

Can't wait for this, was only just playing some TDU last week!

Love that full round the island race!

Also, i dont think your scale of "big" is possible to be fair.

It would be possible, but very time consuming and costly to build such a world in detail.

But ibiza is really ****, it's nearly 3x smaller than Oahu. It lacks nice wide ( 4 or 5 lane) motorways ( unlike oahu/hawai) and (correct me if I'm wrong) it only seems to have 1 dual carriageway on the whole island :(. So bye bye to blasting by @ 200 mph for 10-40 minutes long.

they did do that in the first game O.o lol

Yeah I know they did that but I was trying to say make the area a lot bigger.:)

I dont think it could be too hard to map the UK. Just make Google maps 3d and drop a bit of code in and model some motors and away we go.:p

Thats how its done isnt it?;)

Yeah id have loved it if it was set in the UK, hate other countries all the time in all games, gimme some home loving to appreciate and not usa etc.

Hopefully we will learn more soon :)

And no, its not that simple :P (hence why it hasnt been done!) (if your wanting everything interactive, itll be a hell of a resource hog)

They could just use a similar way as Blizzard. They have got it right when it comes to MMO's. Look at the size of the WoW world/s, granted they are smaller than what the UK could be mapped out. But still, they have very interactive areas and could easily make a whole country playable. The console/PC would only need to use the map of the local region and load the next region as you get closer.

Still think it can be done. Im not upto date with how much PC's can handle nowadays so dont flame me :)

City centres could be accuratly displayed whereas suburbs can be generic and only petrol stations, garages and dealerships and maybe a few others landmarks suited for the game would be accurate and useable.

:)

people saying the image on the website (i nthe text) is of ibiza

Images from the SWF ;)

Seems a bit fake to me. Which pro company calls their CSS "stylez.css" and uses such awful stock imagery and what looks like modded TDU screenshots? Domain was regged in 2007 too.
