Howdy,

I have a 1994 Impreza, currently at the moment when turning on a roundabout there is a vibrating/grinding noise coming from the rear.

I think its the rear diff as i cant think of anything else which would make a noise whilst turning.

Now this isnt a super duper STIWRXVERSION4PRODRIVE of win, its just a 1.8 automatic estate with rust holes for speed so its certainly not an LSD whirring away.

Should i be worried? is it a common problem?

Thanks

Dude

All subaru's are full time AWD.

any way i can check the wheel bearing? its one of the only things i havent changed on a car bar a gearbox/flywheel

No, no they're not.

1.6 is front wheel drive. To check a wheel bearing, jack up the rear and spin the wheels, obviously if it is AWD then ideally it needs to be on some lift in a garage and all fours spun and checked for noise/movement.

wasnt even aware a 1.6 was made, don't think it made it to australia. i will get on it this weekend a bearing sound cheaper than a diff so fingers crossed!!!

Never seen a 1.6..

Subaru's ethos from the beginning was 4wd, even the bloody Justy had it :D

Anyway..

Could be a diff or wheel bearing, certainly wouldn't rule it out.
However more comonly on the early ones was rust between the rear hub and the rear backplate causing it to "expand" as it corrodes and this then touches the inner rim of the rear brake drum / disc.
Easyish to check that with the wheel and brake disc off, it will be all shiny on the lower part of the hub assembly.

Quick job to chisel the rust away :D (or spend a fortune on a new backplate of course)
