Ok so recently ive started to struggle with the clutch. Its makes a creaking noise & its quite heavy. As a result im struggling to hold the biting point & hold it without "jerking" movements.

Its also highier than the other two pedles but them ive heard people say thats fine.

I know nothing about cars but someone at work have mensioned the cable & throwout bearing.

Looking at worst case...how much would a new gear box cost to buy+fit?

EDIT: i ment clutch, sorry

Why would you get a quote for a gearbox when your Clutch is stiff ?
I don't know the car but if it's cable operated you can adjust it which will bring the angle of the peddle back to where it's s'posed to be making it easy to press & hold.
Even worse ways it'd just be new clutch & thrust bearing not a Gearbox.

Which engine does it have?

If it's a 1.8 petrol / 2.0 diesel mine did the same, then my clutch exploded, it'd be the same gearbox / clutch set up as mine has. :D

The shaft that controls the clutch had seized, making the pedal very heavy and stiff, eventually the clutch stuck half on and caused hell.

gotta be the headgasket.

no, in all seriousness - clutch cable, or at worst the clutch itself. My cable had a small hole in the outer cable, that let road muck into the cable. Eventually it began to corrode, and on Monday the clutch started to feel different, the pedal squeaked and then about 30miles later the cable snapped (well the hook on the end of the cable, not the cable itself)
