Just looking for a little advice really.

I have an Skoda Octavia vRS 1.8T 53 plate with 71k miles on the clock but due to recent circumstance I think I need to downgrade.

I need something which is much cheaper to insure (currently pay £100 p/m - 10 month bonus accelerator) and something easier on fuel. I don't do mega miles, just your average.

So budget depends on how much I could get for my car, if I can avoid it I don't really want to fork out any extra cash for another motor.

It's funny really, I've been wanting to chop my car in for something more fun. Don't get me wrong it is a good car just isn't amazing to drive and now I've got to get shot of it and I don't want to lol, but needs must.

I've had a quick look and the only thing that sort of appeals is a Focus 1.6 TDCi...

Thanks

Well thats a Mk2 Focus so you are looking at at least £4-5k for one of those, which is more than your Octavia is worth.

Is this another one of those 'Help me spend thousands to save a few pennies' threads?

How old are you that it costs 1200 quid to insure an Octavia ?

Get yours remapped and stiffen the suspension with struts, and arbs. You would get a lot of info on it at Briskoda forums.

Fun and Focus diesel are incompatible.

In short. Stick with your Octavia. It simply makes no sense to change as the entire change may even end up costing you more money. And forget the diesel, if you aren't doing high mileage, you aren't going to see any benefit.

I'd sit down and add up your costs (cost of changing car, insurance, petrol, tax) and see what the difference is i think you may well be surprised.

Thats cheap compared to what Ive been quoted in the past. Ive got 3yrs NCB and 4yrs drivin exp and insurance on a T5 S40 is £1400 FC a C30 T5 is £1800.
Insurance mainly goes on where you live cause on my current car if I moved 25 miles south its £300 cheaper.

Flippin heck, I'm only 24, with 2 years NCB and 3 points for speeding and I get insurance fully comp on an MR2 for under £500!

I think your biggest saving will be made by ringing around come next insurance renewal.

The other option for cheap + fun motoring is an MX5. Cheap to buy, cheap parts, cheap insurance, lots of community support.

He wants to save money on insurance so you suggest he modifies his car?

Unless he buys an insurance friendly barge his insurance is unlikely to be significantly cheaper, and as Gaygle pointed out, changing cars has hidden costs which can mean its not worthwhile changing.

The modding suggestion is to improve the fun factor Enfield yearns for.

Whats your occupation?! stunt driver? those are some mad quotes.

I live in a bad city thats normally on fire or has riots. Im a computer engineer.
Trust me thats nothing as well. When I 1st passed my test I did a quote on a 1.1 106 and it was £2500 fc and £2000 tpft. Its insane thats why Im moving once my house is sold.

Fun + cheap + economical aren't compatible, you can usually have 2 out of the 3 at best.

Might it make sense if you do want to sell the Octavia, to go a fair way down the "cheap and economical" scale, get a £1 - £1.5k 1.2 something-or-other (Clio, 206, Fiesta etc) and postpone the fun factor until you have actually moved to a better area like you plan to?

Its not me whos selling the VRs mate just to let you know.
I recommend getting a 306 HDi cause with a remap you can get it to 120hp and 200lbs of torque I do believe but not 100% on that. Dont know how much it would cost to do it but the car is economical, cheap and would be fun to drive.

Hey,

I'm 23 no points and no crashes in last three years, four years NCB... I didn't say I want something fun but cheap and economical either.

I only get on average 320 miles out of a 55 litre tank which is why I was thinking of something smaller.

Thanks for the advice.

I hope the tank's bigger than 55L as I'm sure I put 57 in a few weeks ago :p
I average about 25-27mpg in mine around town, from 35mpg up and down the M4 previously.

Where do you intend to make the savings, simply from changing to something worth less? Hoping you do small miles for the rubbish mpg like me, so can't see much room thar. Insurance though... hohum, done quotes?
