Credit card fraud - used with an airline, wtf?

Just had a call from Natwest to say my card has been used fraudulently, and that the first transaction (for about £300) went through, but they blocked another for about £500.

I'm told they were used to buy flights with an airline... I mean.. Is that not a bit of a stupid thing to do if you're using someone else's card? Surely they can contact the airline and obtain all the relevant details?

Epic fraud fail, or am I missing something?

This is a textbook lesson in why I keep on preaching to people about the fact I only use a credit card for most transactions, it's a lot less hassle than having to claim money back that's come from your current account via a debit card :)

I suppose if they're buying with a credit card at the airport they can just give false details. But yes, you're right; buy things with a credit card*!

Just remember to pay it off..

I suppose it rather depends when the flight was for, if they were about to walk in there and then they'd probably get away with it, but if they were booking it surely the tickets would just get cancelled

I would be more worried about the fact if they used your card there and then, they would also need a passport with your name on it

Going to Dubia soon? lol

Someone ordered Sky on my fathers card. Surely you can't even give false details if they have to come to your house to install it?

It is indeed a good reason to have a credit card though.

I had my NatWest debit card compromised on Thursday last week.
No idea how it happened, I got home from work to find an email saying "Somebody has changed your verified by... password and if it wasn't you please phone us".

I did and it turns out somebody tried to spend £300 at Eurostar.
However as this was totally against my spending habits they stopped the first attempt.

They were then very good, cancelled my card and I had a new one via registered courier on Saturday.

Yes, always use credit card! A couple of years ago I suddenly had somebody spend several grand on amazon in china and the stupid credit card company didn't block it even though I hadn't used the card in a year precisely because they used to block too many of my transactions without contacting me causing a lot of delayed deliveries (even overclockers if I remember correctly)!

Had to fill out some forms and cancelled the card after that as I already had a much better credit card (i.e. cash back card).

Lately I've had the card companies frequently make checks on any unusual transactions and I welcome this as long as they actually get in touch with me and don't block the transaction.

Unfortunately they will probably not even bother to follow up on the relevant details. Small cc charges are just written off.

Thread revival. yay!

Got a phone call from Halifax/RBS today from the fraud department.
Turns out someone has made a lot of smaller transactions total over £1k on my card on Sunday. Spread over various catalogue shops and oddly an internet bill. o_0

Card cancelled and a new one being sent, should be sorting it all out once that arrives.
Fun fun.

Not sure how they got my card details though, only use it for reputable internet shops.
Last purchase being a bed from Warren Evans on the 10th, which is suspicious.

I've only ever had one thing happen with my card, I purchased a HDTV online from a reputable firm, wanted to make a small change to the order so phoned them up, changed the delivery option to next day, and added a HDMI cable, had to give my card information again, a week later I went to use the card for a small purchase and it was declined. I was confused, so I logged onto my Egg account, and found that somebody had hammered the card for just short of £4k, including over 2 grand on Ladbrookes online, various TV subscriptions for stuff like ZeeTV (asian TV station apparently?) and various bar bills, I was quite miffed, but Egg were very good about it and sorted it in short order. I have no doubt that it was the scrote who took my card details over the phone that was to blame, as it was the first time the card had been used in forever, and he sounded like a 'bit of a lad' - unfortunately at no point could I prove it.

I'm sure that you'll have no problem getting it sorted mate, card companies have become all too used to dealing with this sort of thing - it is always surprising to me some of the things people buy though, I always think 'how did you plan on getting away with that?' - for example, the guy who spent £2k with Ladbrookes online on my card, surely any winnings would have had to be paid back... to my card?

Actually, with Ladbrokes you can withdraw winnings in a shop. If they created the account using your card, the account card would be sent to their house and they could walk into a shop and withdraw winnings over the counter using said card.
