I see there's no built in defragger so i was wondering if anybody defrag's? & if so what tool do you use?

Regards.

de-fragmentation mostly applies to the windows ntfs and fat filing system... due to their stick it in any place approach

Yep, if you use Windows for long enough and are prone to uninstalling/reinstalling things then it's going to get fragmented pretty quickly. I was amazed after the first few months of using my MacBook that everything was still as smooth running and as quick loading up as it was on day one.

When you say that OS X has "no built in defragger" you're right in some respects. It has no built in hard drive defragger that you can get your hands on! The nature of the disk filing system keeps fragmentation minimised.

Here's a fragmentation report from iDefrag on my home drive. Since rebuilding my system when Snow Leopard came out, I don't think I've actually defragmented at all, there's just no need.

Unless you fill a drive to practically full, you simply don't need to defragment your hard drive on a Mac, the OS will keep it tidy.

Occasionally I restore from a carbon clopy cloner image, this is essentially perfect defragging for free. Not noticed much difference (even on less than 10% free) disks afterwards except possibly the placebo of Snappy(TM).

Doesn't the MAC run some sort of defrag after installing something?

I don't install much on mine at work, it's purely there for checking websites on, but if I remember correctly I am sure the standard Mac installer thing says something about defragging when it's finishing.

Well I have read that Mac OS X has a number of things working in the background to clean up/prevent the need for things like defrag. Or maybe its down the files system, I don't know - but not needed it on my Macbook and that runs/multitasks faster than my more than able bodied PC. :)
