Hi there,

Got my Gigabyte EX58-UD5 last saturday (2nd hand) and it had a few (read +- 5) bent pins on the socket. It got me really ****ed off as I thought it wouldn't work. I tried it anyway and my computer booted and installed fine. It seems fine now but I noticed that I have some weird stuttering/choppy gameplay in Battlefield: Bad Company 2 singleplayer (don't ask me where I got it) so I thought let's ask in here.

Am I right in thinking that if the bent pins are a problem I would get BSOD's or just freezes? Should I try bending them back a bit myself with a pincet? Is it bad to have the cpu/mobo run like this?

Did the seller state there were bent pins, l would have asked for my money back if not.

Vir - "Is it bad to have the cpu/mobo run like this?" what do you think!!

No he didn't state there were bent pins. I've contacted him via e-mail but he's not responding so I guess he knows about it and just ignores me....

Guess I'm trying to find out if it's ok right now? The pins are not broken, just bend a little. Everything seems to run fine and stable so I guess it is making contact?

I'll try some other game tonight and see if that is also a bit choppy. I don't understand how people can sell broken stuff... I couldn't do it.. :) Maybe that's why the price was so low :/ :p

Hi again, send him a couple of more e-mails about the mobo being faulty if he do's not reply, contact the people who run the the site and get them in on the act.

Have you got a copy of the sellers sales discription of the mobo, he has got to provide details about it including any faults!!!!

If they ask why it took so long to report , tell them you were working night shift and this was the first oppitunity to report it plus tell them you have sent the seller e-mails about the bent pins and he is not responding.

Don't try and straighting the pins see if you can get your money back first.

Thanks for your reply.

He's not responding so that leaves me with.... ehhh.. A Gigabyte EX58-UD5 which does seem to work correctly even though it has a few bent pins.

So what do people recommend I do.

- Try to bend them back correctly. If it fails just buy a new one.
- Leave it as it is, if everything seems to work now it should be fine.

I have one question, can it be that if +- 2 or 3 pins don't make contact with the cpu the system will boot and seem ok or is that not possible? As mine boots and has not showed anything strange apart from Bad Company 2 playing really choppy. Like the system freezes every 2 seconds for 1ms (only when walking around).

I'm kind of afraid breaking the pins tonight if I bend them back and then I need a new x58 motherboard which isn't TO cheap :p

Hi m8, if its fleabay get in touch with them, they can help you as l mentioned in my last post!!!

Do not touch the pins.

PS - you need the pins to make proper contact, to solve the little problems your having.

It's not fleabay, it's a marketplace site here in my country. So it's just buying/selling, no further help :)

I'm just not sure if the problems I'm having in bad company 2 are related to the socket pins not making contact but as you can imagine every little thing I notice being slow or weird on my system I now relate to the bent pins :( "IT COULD BE THE PINS NOT MAKING CONTACT".

I think I can manage to straighten the pins, I've seen on some forums they use a mechanical pen, remove the lead and use that to straighten the pins. I might try that.

I've checked WoW and Crysis Warhead, both run excellent with no stuttering or anything. So maybe it's better to just wait for Bad Company 2 to be officially released before trying anything with the pins. I guess part of my question is that, if some pins don't make proper contact will a system boot and just run or is there any way I can check if everything runs properly?

Does it do that in all games or just that one? Am I right to assume it's an illegal copy?

I've tried only three games so far:

Battlefield: Bad Company 2
Crysis: Warhead
World of Warcraft

The problem only exists in Bad Company 2. Yes it is an illegal copy, I do have it preordered though, just couldn't wait to play the singleplayer on my new rig as you can imagine :)

Check if you can see all your Ram in the Bios as well as in Windows i.e. 6GB

I had a brand new Biostar TPower I55 bent 2 pins & 1 broken, probally because of too much pressure on the socket, this is not a rare problem as many would think & I woudnt be surprised if a lot of users are using boards with bent pins.

RMA was a nightmare, it took me over 3 months to get it sorted - ended up paying 50% of the value of a different motherboard which I never ended up using.

I would contact the seller stating your intentions to do a formal complaint procedure with Ebay & Paypal (if you paid via them), other than that I'm not sure about Gigabyte NL but here in the UK if you pay £10 fee they will repair the motherboard.

Intel design sockets totally SUCK! way too fragile, the pins are not durable enough.

Thanks for you reply. It does see all the ram in the bios, I've checked it. I'm actually @ 4.0Ghz with overclocking so it seems to do ok?

Think I'll buy an extra copy of Bad Company 2 tonight and see if it runs ok, maybe it's straightened out with a patch? If Crysis: Warhead runs @ enthusiast 1920x1200 without a problem it must be fine? :S

Could be the dodgy copy, best avoid anyway, be patient!

Have you stress tested the overclock? If so, with what software?

I think I should take your advise and not skip to conclusions, I'll report back once I have the original final patched Bad Company 2 and stress tested my rig using Linx or IntelBurnInTest. I'll start the stress testing in 45 mins when I'm home...

i'd be a bit wary - yes the cpu can still work if a few pins dont make contact, but it could starve it from the power, and ultimately frazzle it.

thats exactly the problem some people were having when lga1156 came out - foxconn make about half of the actual sockets for all manufacturers, and when various procssors started to go pop under heavy overclocks, it was discovered that these sockets weren't making proper contact:

one way or another, id suggest you sort it out...

Thanks for sending me this link. I am going sort it out this sunday, I don't have enough time right now and tomorrow/saturday I will be away.

I've run some some stress testing programs (IntelBurnInTest/Linx) and they pass but I don't wanna burn out my socket or anything described in that anandtech article.
I appreciate the feedback from all of you and I'll report back sunday.

I got this back from the Gigabyte support:

I should try to make them right myself :) nice response

as you can see in the link i put, the cpu had clear indents on the pads that were making contact, and nothing on the ones that didnt. is this the same in your case?

Ok the seller has contacted me again after my last mail. He says he can switch it for a Rampage Gene II or send me money for the motherboard. I'm keeping the rest of the kit I bought off him (memory + 920 D0 which seems rather good clocker)

What would you do?

Switch for a Rampage Gene II or get some money back but not all for the motherboard?

I'm only using 1 GFX card and one pci-e sound card, so the matx gene II seems ok? :)
