Monitor hood, only seen them on Eizo screens, that screen doesn't look like an Eizo so maybe aftermarket?

That screen is an Eizo, I can see the logo in the bottom right on the bezel.

Those monitors are for designers/photographers/etc, so I assume the 'hood' is there to reduce glare or other distortions caused by room lights..

Spot on

Cuts out stray colours and glare falling on the screen to increase colour accuracy. No point calibrating your monitor only to have some orange streetlight from your window fall on it and ruin all your hard work. When retouching I work in a dark room with no light falling on the screen what-so-ever.
