Need a cheaper car...

Cheaper car, as in cheaper to run not to buy :p
You need to look at how much it's actually going to save you though. Even if you bought a car for exactly what you sold yours for it's likely to cost you some money changing. If insurance is your biggest bugbear then shop around for it, chances are you'll be able to save a bit somewhere else. If you can get enough cash together to pay annually you'll usually save at least 10% if not more over paying monthly

Well it says engineer on pay slip but I work in a workshop.

ARGH!!!!!!11!11111

I'm an Engi, not you. But it says that on the pay slip so is more than likely not completely your fault. Computer Technician !!!! :p

Back on topic, how many miles to you do daily Enfield?

??? I am puzzled by this thread

1. I need something easier on fuel. I don't do mega miles, just your average.

The 1.8T is really pretty frugal for a petrol, especially considering the performance. 37mpg on a long run is easy enough to achieve. Sure a diesel will give you more mpg, but with the higher cost of diesel fuel, servicing and the premium you pay to buy a diesel it makes absolutely no sense to trade in an octavia for a diesel unless you are doing 20-30k miles per year. It will cost you more in the long run and you'll have to put up with driving a diesel :( If you drive the diesel hard you'll be suprised how quickly the mpg will drop too.

2. I've been wanting to chop my car in for something more fun. Don't get me wrong it is a good car just isn't amazing to drive and now I've got to get shot of it and I don't want to lol, but needs must. I've had a quick look and the only thing that sort of appeals is a Focus 1.6 TDCi...

Seriously? Sure there are cars that are more fun to drive that the vRS, but I can't think of any that meet your practical requirements and budget. Sure a focus can be good fun ... but the 1.6TDCi? A big heavy diesel lump in the front always wrecks the handling. To see any serious handling improvement you are looking at something rwd like an s2000 - but then other costs like insurance, tyres etc get silly.

3. I need something which is much cheaper to insure (currently pay £100 p/m - 10 month bonus accelerator)

Wow that's a lot. I have a chipped 1.8T 4x4 Octavia .. insurance £300per year. Perhaps you should be looking at a 1.2 Fabia or fiesta with 50bhp. I imagine that's the only way you'll see the insurance and fuel savings you want with your budget ... but fun? hmmm!!!

Honestly it seems to me you have convinced yourself you want to change for the sake of change. In the long run keeping your current octavia is going to be the cheapest option unless you trade in for a shopping trolley. I've had my octavia 8 years and only recent spent my first pennies on it refreshing the struts and bushes etc (not because it was strictly necessary but because it took the ride and handling back to how the car was when new) They are solid reliable cars compared to most the rubbish out there.

The only other car I can think of that *might* fit the bill is a Fabia vRS. Diesel, perhaps a bit cheaper to insure and still reasonably fun ....but it won't be a patch on your octavia in so many ways... but then there is always the curve ball - how about an old Mx5? Fun, lightweight so fuel mileage is good, and pretty reliable? Of course practicality goes right out the window but you can't have it all!

Surely you should be looking at a small older hatchback with basic engine. Something like a fiesta, corsa, punto, etc. Or maybe something a little bigger like a focus, astra, golf, etc.

You don't need to spend thousand on a car to save money. I currently drive a 2001 punto sporting. Although it's a little on the slow side, it is pretty fun to drive, the engine is pretty revvy, 6 speed box is good, and it's nippy enough around town. I only paid £1000 for it, insurance currently cost me £38 a month, and i can get 400 miles out of 45 litre of fuel. It's obviously not great on the motorway, but will sit comfortably at 60-70mph and return 45-50 mpg. I certainly wouldn't think about spending thousands more on a newer car that'll only do the exact same thing, and in some case probably not as good.

Where is the sense in spenidng more money on a car so it costs less to run?

Read my post again. I said I don't want to fork out any more cash on buying another car. What I would get from my car I would spend buying something else which is cheaper to run.

Then how do you intend to get a 1.6 TDCi Focus given they cost more than a 53 plate Octavia?

Hi mate, you've misunderstood I think.

I wanted to changed my car for something fun, ie. quick, rubbish on fuel and ridiculous to insure. But something has come up which means I can't do that so am looking to save.

I just said it's funny because i've been wanting to get rid of my car but now something has come up and I need to get my monthly payments down I don't want to get rid of it because I know whatever else I get which is cheaper will probably be even more boring. Ya get me?

I found one that was just over £4k. Skoda offered me between £2.5k - £3.5k so am thinking I could get maybe £4k for mine if I sold privately.

Last time I looked on autotrader a few months ago, all the Octavias in my area where around £5k with similar mileage but now there don't seem to be any to compare!

Ah sorry I did misunderstand! The way I had read it left me totally puzzled :)

It's a tough one then! How much will something like the focus save you on insurance? It's alwas a risk buying a car of that sort of age - you never know if someone is selling it because they know of some impending problem!

My mate recently bought a £5k 90k mile focus tdci with the same intentions as you. Within a 1000 miles it blew the turbo ... it was best part of a grand to put a new one on it. Another 1000 miles later the big end went ... totally writing off the engine  (and effectively the whole car!). He was undoubtably unlucky - but sometimes the devil you know is better than the devil you don't!

My missus has a 1.2 fabia .. does 50-60mpg, insurance is peanuts, totally reliable, cheap to buy ..... and suprisingly around town it's really good to drive ..... however accelerating onto motorways ... zzzzzzzzzzzzz. Something like that would definitely save you a lot of cash, more than the focus in the long run ... but wouldn't recommend it if you do lots of motorway miles.
