Got my 18th birthday coming up in a few weeks time and I am wanting a pair of nice good quality speaks.

I have know knowledge about brand or what good and bad but what i want is

- Good quality sound will mainly be used for music but with the odd bit of gaming
- Budget i would say £100-150
- Want some speaks that i can also use my i pod with (not through computer)

Would you reccomend say spending £50 on a soundcard then £100-120 on some speakers?

Thanks

Are you willing to buy second hand equipment? You could get a good quality seperates setup for that kind of money.

If not, something like the Aego M would be a good bet.

Or a soundcard, amp (with mp3 in), and bookshelf speakers, there are some amazing deals about 2nd hand.

Aye, for my 21st I bought a cambridge audio A1 mk3 amp and a set of Tannoy Mercury F1 Custom bookshelf speakers. That's a budget Hi-Fi setup, but it blows away any PC speakers I've ever heard, and pretty much anything can be connected to the amp. My only slight regret is perhaps not getting an amp with a built in headphone amp too, though probably would have added a fair bit to price.

If you're willing to go second hand, there are some real bargains to be had, though I recommend trying to buy local and checking the kit out for damage and even maybe previewing it first before buying.

Logitech Z-2300? Pretty good set of speakers with nice audio. The sub is also pretty mighty, able to shake most rooms :p

Although I have went with hi-fi seperates myself recently, I think your best bet would be a soundcard from the members market with either the Aego 2.1 as mentioned or Harmen Kardon soundsticks 2 which I replaced and were brilliant.

Erm word of warning... Don't buy the Xonar DS if you have Windows 7 x64... Plagued by errors and I commonly get Bluescreens due to CMUDAXP.sys which still hasn't been fixed by Asus!

I'm running W7 x64 with Xonar Ds, has run perfectly, no problems whatsoever.
