(thats while skype is running)

i was wanting to know if anyone can help out.
whenever i run skype and a game at the same time, i get huge lag spikes, making it nearly un playable.
its generally fine when im not on skype.

on the homehub settings i have upnp on, firewall off, always use this IP, and DMZ on. and running AVG anti virus.

any advice would be helpful.

why are you using skype at the same time as playing a game. it makes NO SENSE.

use Teamspeak or Ventrillo for gaming if you need to speak to someone.

Also the BT homehub is BAD for gaming, i would buy a Netgear or something else.

Out of the above..

Suggestions..

UPNP is pointless if you're using DMZ
DMZ is dangerous if you aren't 100% sure what you're doing
Firewall should be on!
AVG is terrible

Homehub is also a really poor router for anything besides light browsing.

I don't mean to 'rubbish' your post.

Something like this will perform much better

Skype + gaming is likely to be a no-no unless you have a very good connection.

Are you using skype & games on the same machine?

Why is Skype meant to be so bad? As been using for ages while playing online games. Admittely noththing competive, but it's been fine for (to name a few):

Battlefield 2
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter
Borderlands
Sins Of A Solar Empire
Many MMO's

Have to disagree that the homehub is rubbish from my experience anyway, mine has been flawless along with BTs 100% stable connection.
Never thought i would praise BT.

the firewall off is the Hubs firewall, i have AVG's firewall up.

what difference does the router make? (meant in a non aggressive way) will it improve the speeds? or just the strength?
and is it easy switching them? linking up a mac + time machine wired, and 2 laptops and this PC wireless.

thing is, the other people on skype have very similar connections, aside from slightly Lower ping.
and they have zero problems.

cheers for the comments so far

Using a BT Homehub here to, and the only issues I was having were due to me not having Steam Games setup properly in the application sharing section of the routers menu.

Since enabling that I've had zero issues playing CS:S (that's the only game I play online atm)

do you know of any way to add new games/ports to the list?

as most of the ones i play arent listed on their list

What you just said makes no sense, get a clue.

I use skype with my brother and my best friend when playing wow, I do use VENT/TS for other games but for the quality of sound and conference ability Skype does it better for me. I don't want push to talk and I dislike voice activation as it causes either artificial delay or drop in the first audible sound, so I use always on. Oh and the ease and quickness without having to host a server client. Skype is 2 clicks.

It has no relative effect on ping whatsoever on an 9.5meg, 733Kbit up.
